If an affiliate program is not small affiliate friendly (especially small US Affiliate), then they are NOT Affiliate Friendly!
How about those who does not have Alexa installed in their browser? Since webmasters are mostly the ones having Alexa in their browsers, they maybe are just digging up some ideas and info to have on their own websites, so probably they may not be playing on the casino, bingo, poker, and betting sites, and those that are actually playing on these sites may be just regular users who are not aware of the Alexa rankings.
In my opinion, I guess that one factor that figures out their popularity is through how high their keyword rankings are in search engines when it comes to the keywords 'online casino', 'online bingo', 'online poker', and 'online betting', plus which ones are mostly featured in news articles on well-known casino/gambling news websites in a non-negative issue. However, since the search engine rankings may be affected by personalized search and unscrupulous optimizers, this may not be a very concrete factor to define how popular a gambling website is.
While I agree the Alexa data could be slightly skewed I also think that SERP rankings are a much much more inaccurate indication of traffic and as they dont take into account things like brand value, quality, verbal referrals, offline advertising and email marketing.
I would personally stick with Alexa for traffic indication. You could also look at Compete.com
With regards to turnover of operators, well all of the PLC companies publish these figures on their annual reports. I dont know if you could find out the turnover of private companies.
Good luck

We ran a test here a few years ago and proved that we could easily manipulate Alexa rankings by visiting sites with the toolbar installed.

Doesn't casino city rank the sites by actual traffic or such. Not only is it the same owner as gpwa, but I've found their data a useful reference.
Alexa Rank has become a central element in site monetization strategies and I think no other thing is better than for you to search how much visitors have visited to your site and for this Alexa tool is available which you just need to install it.
The alexa tool only shows the people who have visited and who have the toolbar installed.. Since not everyone has it, this is not an accurate tool..
This topic has come up before - no company (unless they're public and their numbers are listed) is going to tell you their turnover and numbers etc.
In regards to popularity, there isn't really a concrete way to find this, unless you run a survey to a large group of people and put the answer down as your evidence. Every group is going to tell you their casino is most popular.. so you're better to ask the people who are actually playing at these sites.

There are 3rd party companies which more accurately measure traffic - although I admittedly have no clue how they do it. And many of these have all kinds of scoring algorithms for sites which include traffic. Syntryx was advertising to gambling aff programs (so they could ID the good websites from the average ones).
At the GPWA conference in Vegas (January 2009) there was a presentation (sorry this is all I have right now).

And I'll chime in again about Alexa - their numbers are easily manipulated unless you are in the top 50K. Do not rely on this data. So the difference between #3,000,000 and #1,000,000 is not distinguishable.
Absolutely true. No group can survive if they even just hint that another group could be the better choice. As customery in all business areas, they have to claim in the least that no group is better than them.
And, I think, the popularity of any gambling site heaviliy depends on in which part of the world a player lives and gambles. As an affiliate, one must be clear about his target market and then try, by following forum discussions in that market, to estimate the most popular sites.
According to my experience, the popularity of a gambling site says nothing about your chance of making good revenue there as an affiliate.
There is no way to quantify this - publicly listed companies will show you information as they have to but not what you really want to see
At the end of the day it's all relative - it depends on your target market, type of player, demographic, budget etc.
Every player/affiliate is different too so a lot of it comes down to opinion.
If there was a set formula for things to work, everyone would do it.
