The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is reportedly considering a significant change to its long-standing rules regarding sports wagering. Sources indicated to Sports Illustrated that momentum is building within the organization to lift the current prohibition on betting on professional sports for student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
The Division I Board of Directors has already laid the groundwork for this potential rule change, forwarding the proposal to the Division I Council for further discussion scheduled for next week. If the council votes in favor, this deregulation could be fast-tracked and implemented as early as late June.

That includes football, basketball, hockey, baseball, golf and tennis. But in a video conference April 21, the D-I board voted 21–1 in favor of directing the council to “adopt legislation to deregulate the prohibition on wagering on professional sports.”
It also “directed the NCAA staff to develop concepts for the appropriate committees to consider regarding a safe harbor, limited immunity or reduced penalties for student-athletes who engage in sports wagering but seek help for problem gambling.”
Prohibitions against gambling on college sports would remain in place, sources say.
