Default Netherlands regulator says 94% of gamblers play with licensed operators

NOGA, the Netherlands Online Gambling Association, reports in its newly released NOGA Online Gaming Barometer that its consumer survey shows that the number of gamblers among the respondents is growing, while the number of respondents playing at an unlicensed provider is falling with 94% of the respondents who have gambled since the opening of the legal online gambling market in October 2021 "appear to have done so with licensed providers."

But NOGA also warned that even with a lot of untargeted online gambling advertising, over two-thirds of gamblers still don't know how to tell a licensed provider from an unlicensed one.

“This is a really important task for all of us. Whether or not you have gambled before; it must be as easy and clear as possible to identify licensed safe providers. Especially if that recognition deteriorates again due to the upcoming advertising ban” , says Peter-Paul de Goeij, director of NOGA.

“It is good to see that the positive effects of legalization are becoming increasingly visible. But today it is still too easy for online gamblers to end up in the clutches of organized crime. Unlicensed providers, for example, still advertise online, also via major search engines. There are many tens of thousands of unlicensed gambling sites active where Dutch gamblers also end up and get into trouble. It is up to us, together with the government, to make the licensed offer even safer in the coming years and thus protect online gamblers even better – while the licensed offer remains attractive enough to keep them away from illegal activities.”

Survey... When they ask people, it's likely that few will admit that they play with a non-licensed operator.
Besides, it goes on to say that 2/3 do not distinguish between sites. So probably a Curacao or other license is a legitimate license for them for the Netherlands.

The problem with surveys is that they are greatly affected by the quality of the sample, recall ability, and social desirability (assuming that respondents have been able to accurately identify whether they were dealing with licensed operators or not).

I am in favor of making things as safe as possible and protecting consumers, but that requires well-designed policies and research.

94% gambles at a regulated gambling site, but over 67% don't know to tell if a gambling site is regulated or unregulated... Lol.

Some companies operating in the Netherlands start to send emails with request from affiliates to explain how they are going to solve these aspects:
    1. How are you looking to tackle the opt-out?
    2. How are you going to look at reaching the minimum of 95%?

You can create a survey with the questions and answers you want to hear and manipulate the date to present your best outcome. Certainly not going to post the results to prove how bad initiatives are. And agree, people are not going to admit playing on sites that they are not suppose to be.
