Default New Affiliate Site - Advice on getting started

    Hi,

It is my first post here and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am setting up my first affiliate site. I have purchased the domains and have a wealth of ideas, but when it comes to putting a site together I am pretty clueless to put it bluntly.

A friend recommended WordPress but having researched it I have seen that you are not allowed to publish affiliate links on the site/blog. Is this correct?

Regardless any advice on the best means as to getting my content online would be a great help. I do have some finances to get my site developed personally, but i am hoping to avoid this.

    Looking forward to your thoughts.

    Kind Regards

    Daniel

Hi mate, nice to see a newbie starting off!

I use wordpress and as far as I'm aware as long as wordpress is installed on your own domain ( therefore not www.betting blog.wordpress.com ) then there is no problem. I've been using it for years and never had a problem.

There's a lot of useful info on how to put together a Wordpress site at wordpress.com Daniel. It would be best if you can get your head around doing it yourself. But suggest don't just pile in. Think about it, search Google and read as much as you can. As an example , search 'alternatives to wordpress' . Will give you a lot to think about.

There are hundreds/thousands of affiliate sites that use Wordpress.

If you want to be 'different' you could take a look at different website builders (Bluevoda, Wix etc etc). These are drag and drop, WYSIWYG editors. If you don't want to learn coding yourself these are an option. I've seen various webmasters slate these but personally I've used one for about 8 years, never had any problems, and got rankings OK. Lot to learn though, even so.

PS might be worth considering now...do you want the site to be mobile optimised. There are some Wordpress themes that do this (think they are called 'responsive' themes). If you are expecting a lot of mobile traffic (and it's growing all the time) it will pay to think this through at the beginning.

You cannot use the Wordpress.com blogger as a commercial means. However, you can build a website using the Wordpress CMS system and use your own domain. You will also need hosting and patience to read the forums when something goes wrong (if you are not a developer yourself). Wordpress is one of my favourite systems.

I recommend these guys , get the package through them so as to use their hosting and set up service. Their "after care" support service is fantastic! They reply to questions within 24 hours.
If you do not want to spend any money on a website you can opt for Blogger (it belongs to Google) and it is easy to use, it’s free and as far as I'm aware you can post affiliate links on this (I never received any emails from them asking me to remove affiliate links).

How are you planning on generating traffic to your website though? Do you have any SEO skills or marketing ideas to get customers to your website? It is useless having a website which no one looks at.
    Good luck with everything

    Hi Daniel,
Welcome to the affiliate world. Reading Kristal's post she is correct you can have a great looking website, but with no visitors you will earn nothing.
Think carefully how you are going to market your site and definitely do not go down the black hat route for a quick buck. Its worth taking your time to build your brand online. I am still looking for the answers myself, but i will get there eventually.
Also Wordpress is a great platform as adding content cannot get any easier to a technophob.

Kristal, do you have any ethical seo contacts that you know?

    Good luck Daniel

In my opinion, Wordpress can be a very valuable tool for affiliates. And, before you get properly started it's well worth researching the numerous amount of themes and plugins available to users. There are plenty aimed specifically at the affiliate marketplace that can your life easier.

For instance, there's a plugin to make your affiliate links look more attractive in browsers and another that makes it very easy to create tables for comparing welcome bonuses.
