8 out of 10 banks have routines to contact the customer when they see transactions to and from illegal gambling companies, shows a new investigation Sentio has carried out on behalf of the Norwegian Lottery Authority. In 2020, 6 out of 10 banks had these routines in place.
Our experience is that customers change their playing patterns when the banks see them and inform them. Either they stop playing altogether or they stick to legal gambling sites under public control, says Silje Sægrov Amble is a lawyer at the Norwegian Lottery Authority.
The survey also shows that almost 7 out of 10 banks inform about any consequences for the customer.
Gambling problems are rarely a topic in loan meetings
2 out of 3 banks answer that gambling problems are rarely or occasionally a topic in loan meetings with the customer. Only 1 in 4 has general information about gambling problems on their websites or in other information material.
"We believe that problem gambling should become part of the compulsory training in the bank, and we are happy to help with information. Problems with gambling are a public health problem, and the banks can contribute to helping people who have these problems, says Amble. “This means that the bank can be the first place gambling problems come to light. Then you can also prevent people from going for several years without telling anyone about the problem.
