Default NY Post: Christie expected to veto online gambling bill

The New York Post is reporting that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is expected to veto a bill that would have legalized online gambling in the state. According to sources, Christie is coming under pressure from Ceasars Entertainment to veto the bill, because Caesars believes it would get in the way of possible federal legislattion.

    From the Post:

Democratic State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a co-sponsor of the bill, which passed both legislative houses with ease, said yesterday he believes if Christie vetoes the measure that similar efforts making their way through state legislatures across the country would also fail.

For Atlantic City casinos, the extra revenue "could be life or death," Lesniak said.

Lesniak said if Christie vetoes the bill he will not try to override it.

"The biggest problem I have with Internet gambling is how do you stop kids," anti-gambling advocate Arnie Wexler said. "The Internet is the quickest, fastest way to addiction."
-this might make the decision take a little longer, legalization really will take a toll not only for those who "gamble" but also with everyone around

Guess the good news here is that the reason for a veto is to make it easier to for federal legislation. Not sure why that would be however.

For sure this issue will take longer time for there are many things to consider in this legislation, plus the affection of internet gambling to every adolescence is one factor that is taking big consideration.

At the risk of sounding numpty, how can Ceasars Entertainment apply pressure on a New Jersey Gov. ???

The only reason why Christie is having second thoughts on the gaming bill is because he has presidential aspirations for 2014. Besides his own party giving him a hard time about this piece of legislation, and his casino backers also not happy about intrastate gaming.....now he is backing down because of the support he may lose if he decides to run in 2014. So its all personal for him, just like every other government official in this country.....

Well, online gambling bill might takes too long before it has been approved because online gambling companies are still currently working on ways to filter out minor players.

I think there are ways to filter out minors in the field. For one, there should be no wagering before sign up. For two, there should be no successful signup before valid proofs of identification. For three, there should be no activation before a payment method under a person of legal age. There's a lot of ways to track age, though can be faked especially when a father's card and identity is used. But I guess that can be solved with a voice verification as well as face to face interview. I know this can be a long process, but if that's what it takes to bring online gambling for this State beyond, why not?

The Press of Atlantic City says that the deadline for the Governor's decision on the matter has been incorrectly reported as Feb. 24 in various media outlets. Feb. 24 is 45 days after the bill passed (on Jan. 10), but apparently the N.J. constitution says that the governor must take action by the date of the first legislative meeting after 45 days, which will be on March 3.
