Default Obtuse Opposition & Ridiculous Regulators: APCW Perspectives for 6 April, 2018

The torch carrying mobs from Sheldon Adelson's
Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling are back...
shooting themselves in the foot with their ignorance.
Also, the UK Advertising Standards Authority is not happy
with a "recklessness" commercial from PokerStars that
    'exploits inexperienced players'.

    Interesting show again :
    As you said ...

1/ US opposition to Online Gambling.
As you've pointed out there seems no reluctance to promote Vegas as a go-to gambling destination - "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" etc is a strong part of the US party psyche - but somehow the existence of a screen and/or keyboard seems to suddenly make gambling a dangerous situation.

Of course it's only because the browser happens to be pointed at someone else's casino - if it was pointed towards the land-based operations - and if the owners were allowed to continue their lucrative monopoly on US gambling habits then everything would be fine.

Can you imagine a land-based casino resort advert if it told the truth?
Manky food, grubby carpet, prostitution and venereal disease are all waiting for you on your NEXT trip to Vegas!!

    2/ UK Regulators.
Yes - sports gambling / poker play is a recreational / aspirational activity - and does not fit well into the advertising regime of "all experiences must show likely results".

Can you imagine a lottery advert if it told the truth?
10,000,000 up for grabs! You could win it this weekend ... but you are far more likely to be hit by a truck - so be careful out there!!

Yet we still see state lotteries promoting pretty girls, colourful lights, huge prize totals, on TV, newspapers, in shopping malls. You could win cars, boats, houses etc... despite the fact that it is almost impossible.

Lotteries are demonstrably the worst gambling return to players (regularly returning only 60-80% of funds as prize money) but somehow there are the acceptable face of gambling for the masses? All sanctioned by the politik-speak authority because it's "licensed and taxed".

    Default Win at any cost...

It's about winning at any cost, most especially the cost of integrity. Specifically, people have no conscience about lying - people are sociopaths through and through. Just within the last day or so I was watching an interview of Trey Gowdy and he touched upon that. It reminded me of how years ago I came across how Nixon was asked about that decades ago and his response was that he simply had to win at the time, as if that was okay or something.

    J. Todd did well to use the word "obtuse" here, as almost certainly no doubt he was hearkening back to "Shawshank Redemption" in which the main character Andy Dufresne so famously used that word with the wicked warden, while the audience already knew that the warden was not "obtuse" but merely lying plain and simple. In fact I would not hesitate to suggest that at that point in the film even the audience can't believe Dufresne could not even see that already.

(For the record, I'm nonpartisan, non-ideologue, independent. Integrity and the lack thereof is equal opportunity in the greatest of extremes.)

We have been watching these for years.

Finally this one fits well with an article we had already written about Poker Stars vs the ASA. So we went back and edited in a link to APCW.

Thanks for all the great content!

    That's so funny!

I did think about Shawshank when choosing a name for this one! ! ! LOL A great movie and one of my favorites.

In this case I decided to use the word "obtuse" for the opposition because they seem slow to understand... possibly deliberately.... as well as the alliterative value for the title

I don't doubt some would buy it, but I think the "possibly deliberately" part and the wicked warden's version of obtuseness is more heavily weighted and likely for the ringleaders, counting on the "some" buying it, and also hoping those in power who do know better or are quickly made to know better simply run with it disingenuously anyway. In fact, when it comes to running with something dishonest or which doesn't hold any water, we have definitely seen that a time or two before. I saw one suggestion this latest volley could be a desperate move in the wake of RAWA's failure and I'm inclined to agree with that too. And I do love some nice alliteration.

Not unlike in Australia... I live in a small country town (pop approx 12K). We have 3 pubs (all within a 5 min drive), and all of them have pokie machines. Every state in AU has at least 1 land-based casino - there's a total of 12 in all.

Add to that all the sports betting facilities (most, if not all Aussie pubs have this). Include other betting options of lotteries and X-lotto, and licensed online bookies. FFS, even on Anzac Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps 1914 - 1918) its a long standing tradition for the troops (on that day) to play 2UP (a doppy Poli wanted to try and ban that too).

Australia has earned its reputation as one (1) of the biggest, if not the largest gambling nation.

    Yet, and totally ironic...
Knucklehead Polis in Canberra voted in the amended IGA (August 2017), banning unlicensed gaming, and the marketing of such services etc to Aussies.

It's all about the 'lost tax dollars', nothing more, nothing less.

    If it's any consolation...
Nick Xenophon the clueless nitwit Poli who spearheaded the amendments to the 2001 IGA, lost his political seat in the recent state elections. Meaning... He lost his job. lo-f'ing-l.

As soon as Polis start meddling in matters/topics they have little to no hands-on-experience with, you can guarantee they'll F#CK it up.

That's a sure "bet" right there!
