Post Online gaming brouhaha in Canada

This is a juicy one. Let's see if we can follow the trail:

    • The Alexander First Nation in Alberta, Canada, has set up a web hosting service for online casinos on their reservation near Edmonton. They've also created their own gaming commission to award licenses and collect application fees.
    • To help in the process of starting this business up, they asked the Mohawks for help.
    • The Mohawks apparently run a similar operation in Quebec. Only one problem -- it's illegal.
    • The province of Alberta has asked the Alexander First Nation (part of the Cree) to cease and desist.
    • The Alexander First Nation politely gave them the finger, and continue to run their operations, citing sovereignty issues.

If true the First Nation will win the battle. In Canada the aboriginals for the most part are sovereign entities when occupying their own land. I have always thought highly of the aboriginals, good for them.

According to that article, the Mohawks that run the gaming commission out of Quebec (The Kanawake Gaming Commission); I never had any idea that it was illegal? If it is, how come it has not been shut down? Is it because it is on native land, and the government cannot come in and shut it down?

I would like to know what other people have to say about this?

The Kanawake Gaming Commission is located in Quebec the cree is Mohawk. The lands they reside on are Sovereign Lands with respect to Canada. The Government officials on both levels nationally and provincially have no authority. So the Mohawks are not subject to any foreign laws both internally and externally. Giving out gaming licenses is 100% legal for them to do so.

The situation is Alberta is kind of the same situation. The bottom line is they will get their way. The consequences for the Alberta provincial government is quite severe, considering this tribe likely owns most of the province. The Supreme Court of Canada recognises this fact. The fact there is a ongoing land treaty deals that still have to be resolved.

Therefore when you tell a Native Canadian what they can do on their own land expect to get the finger. They will get their way in Alberta I can almost guarantee it. Sure wouldn’t want to interrupt the massive flow of oil coming from this province.

Canadians in general are quite divided over this issue of Native Rights. The type of topic that would never end if debated.

if that's the case .... then its a little late in the game to go changing things now.

......tempted to say they should have s#it on their natives early on like we did in the states .... but Iwon't
Almost Here! How would you like to be able to get not just one sign up from your player, or even a couple, but every single casino they join from here on? I've a plan that can make that happen and it will likely also tell you every time the player is active within the casino.

I guess having your cultural identity pulled out from under you Canada decided to take different approach. The same goes for Quebec although conquered by force our early ancestors made peace deals. The U.S took a rather different approach. They kicked out the English, French and gave the Aboriginals some concessions. But made it very clear, we are all Americans.
In Canada cultural tolerance is widely accepted. For example, all labelling of goods must be in French and English. In Quebec all signs must be in French only. Is this a good thing? Not sure.

This is interesting, now in the minority Quebec has always wanted to separate from Canada. Apparently the Natives still have disputed land claims for half the Province. I wonder how that would work considering they wish to remain as part of Canada.

I love this attitude. If all the world would practice more tolerance and less ethnocentricity we would all have a better life.

Unfortunately people will never learn and continue to kill each other over ideologies and religion.

The Mohawk are saying they're not helping the Alexander First Nation.

Chuck Barnett of Mohawk Internet Technologies says it would be "moronic" for the company, which now hosts hundreds of Internet gaming sites, to assist a competing commercial enterprise.
