Default Promoting State Run Books - US

Does anyone here promote the State legal books here in the US? Fanduel, MGM, Draftkings? I have been promoting offshore books for over 15 years. Now that many US States are legalizing sports betting in some fashion can you promote the books that do? I keep hearing and reading conflicting information.

Some say you can't if you first promoted offshore books with a domain. You need a whole new domain. Others say you cannot promote of you live outside the state which allows it (I live in Calif. it will probably never legalize it). Where can I get information about being an Affiliate for the US states that do allow sportsbetting. I know Michael seems to promote them. Where do I get information in doing the same?

    Thanks in Advance,

    John

I promoted Fanduel and Drafkings. They both stole my revenue. Is it enough?

I talked to both of them about promoting sports. You cannot have anything to do with offshore sportsbooks. Not only do you need to stop promoting them but you also have to end all relationships with them. That means if you have residual revenue coming in you have to cancel your affiliate account and forgo the future revenue from customers you have acquired.

You do not need to live in the state you are promoting but you will need to get a license to operate - state by state.

The rev share isn't as good as the offshore books.

No they stole it via retrospectively changed terms in case of DK (they sent me some 30K as goodbye). Fanduel just closed the account.

They are not people who will bring money to affiliates.

This page is getting pretty outdated, we really need to update it, but i'll share it anyways as it contains useful information and paints a bigger picture of what to expect when entering the regulated US market:

    https://www.bettingusa.com/affiliate/

    Cliff notes:

You need to be licensed in the following states to promote sportsbooks: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Colorado, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Indiana.

You currently do not need a license to promote in the states of Illinois, Nevada, and Iowa.

You can promote horse racing, daily fantasy sites, and online lotteries without being licensed. You will need a license to work with casino/poker operators but the state pool is smaller: NJ/PA/MI (poker also in NV).

The licensing process for CPA is pretty easy - some states more than others. $500-$1000 application fee in each state (NJ is the exception here, free) but expect a complete background check including financials. Pennsylvania will fingerprint you, MI takes 5 years of tax returns, overall a time consuming process.

The licensing process for revenue share is rumored to be extremely complicated, difficult, extensive, and expensive. I think only a handful of companies have completed the process - and even more importantly - operators do not want to work on revenue share deals in the US market so even if you succeed at gaining that license, you might have difficulty securing access to any deals, especially if you aren't driving large volumes of new customers.

If you are working with offshore now or recently, not only will licensing be difficult - but operators won't likely work with you.

As a small independent affiliate myself, I can say without reservation the US market is dominated by large media companies. Hobbyist and independent affiliates are going to have a tough time getting any traction - but it's not impossible.
