Hi folks,
I have a question about domain ownership. How do you allocate the ownership of your domain when you are 2 people.
Should we make company profile in some domain registrar? Is there an option to lock the domain for transfers and only unlocking it with 2 person authentication.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks!
Having a legally binding contract between the affected parties.
If the domain is owned by a company, corporation etc that the partners share ownership in is likely a major part of that.
The person or "entity" listed as the "Registrant" is the legal owner of the domain.
Sadly, even with that, a single domain registrar account, tied in to a single email address, username and password, ultimately has control over transfers and changes.
Depending on the registrar used, one possible method of at least raising flags of attempted transfer might be setting up 2 factor authentication, but in most cases that will be tied in to a single email address, or sms phone number. This might slow the process slightly but there are still ways one partner could possibly take control of the domain without the involvement or knowledge of the other partner.
I know of specific times and consequences where partners had a conflict, and by the time one partner had reacted and tried to stop the other party from action it was too late and the domain had been transferred from a corporate owned domain account to a privately owned and controlled account.
While I agree that steps should be taken to protect all parties involved in a partnership, it sounds like there is already a hint of distrust, so you may want to look at a lot of other factors, such as bank accounts, credit accounts and the liability of such. Does one partner have more control over the revenue and yet the other partner has signed higher numbers of personal liability?

Well do you think that legally binding contract will help even after one of the partners has sold the domain in other country. Do you think that this contract will help if you show it to the new registrar?
There must be some kind of double authentication, some of the registrars should already invented that option. It is common issue with domain ownership. There are domains that cost millions and i am wondering how the people do it legally.
Have you already got the domain? If so, who is it registered with? If not, do you have any ideas about who you want to register it with?
different registrars may have different protection methods/ ownership rules
Domain is already bought and costs at least $1million. It is registered to one of us and we have notary signed contract that we share 50% of everything. Now we want to transfer it to company account in some registrar that offers domain locking and unlocking with email address and phone. Email will be of one of the partners, the phone of the other. That's the case. Thanks
Well with that many zeros involved I'd be going to the registrars and asking them what processes they offer. Off the top of my head I'd start with one of the more expensive - Network Solutions.
But have a look at this, maybe this is the/an answer........
https://clarivate.com/markmonitor/so...main-security/
"We give clients peace of mind with a sophisticated set of security technologies and processes including 80 TLDs with Registry Lock supported, 100% of domains available for Super Lock, and 12x daily scans for unapproved registry DNS changes on every domain we manage."
I think the key term here is 'Super Lock' and that's what you probably want to be looking for.
** But the first thing I'd be thinking is to try and avoid any external transfer. Check with the people it's already registered with to see if they can do an internal transfer between accounts, and how easy that is to do/nothing can go wrong....that may be safest option providing they also offer the full locking capabilities you need.
Here is a simplified version of superlock

Interesting they use the term quorum since that often refers to odd numbers, but it does look like exactly what you are looking for. I wonder how many other registrars will start offering such.I could see this as a nice added security feature going forward, requiring at least 2 responses from the sources listed before the unlock could take place.Quote:
To disable SuperLock, you’ll need a quorum of 2 users in the account to proceed.
I am not sure if Network solutions offers this, but certainly I can see it gaining traction if they, or other high volume registrars such as godaddy or Tucows would do so.
