Default "Publishers no longer need to submit their site to be eligible for ..Google News"

"Google said "Publishers no longer need to submit their site to be eligible for the Google News app and website. Publishers are automatically considered for Top stories or the News tab of Search." This was spotted by Barry Adams:"

Seems on the surface like a great update, if the value of one's content can really "earn" their way into the top news, has anyone seen/experienced a real time example of this happening? A site that was not in G news getting featured?

So how long will it take till 'non-approved' sites can be shown on Google News?
Now you can only see the burried pages but they don't actually show up on the news.

I personally wouldn't get too wrapped up in this. It's a good thing for main stream sites. However: Only content that complies with our overall content policies and requirements will be eligible to appear. Given Google News can be viewed/read by minors, I highly doubt Google will allow gambling content.

There is a lot of gambling content on it. I get emails four or five times a day and it is all gambling related. However, it is also a lot of FOG (friends of google) content. Google has a history of picking articles from big advertisers or ex employees who start websites. No reason for that to change. One of the reasons this might be happening is that google was getting questions about sites that did not meet the requirements but were included (actioinnetwork for example) and sites that met the requirements but were turned down. Always for a vague "quality" requirement but the content of some of these sites was far better than ones that were accepted.

The actionnetwork has former google employees as investors and as top executives of the company. They were given a pass on the requirements when they started. Everyday I got an email that had it's content in it. Think how much in free advertisement that is for a company just starting out. How much would it be worth to your site if everyday you could have google send out 10k or 20k emails with your content to people who singed up with google to receive gambling content.

Google news is just another part of the sleazy Google monopoly. This will not change it.

Has any page which is not accepted by Google News yet, noticed any traffic?

I haven't seen any examples of a site that wasn't already a part of G news being listed, so I too am curious if anyone else has. We had plans to try and get in for a couple of our brands and put them on hold with this news, and we def have the type of content that would qualify on a regular basis - unique and well reported news that is regularly linked too and shared on social. I'm not sure what else can get you in with this new system, but maybe it's a slow rollout and/or not in every industry?

Does this relate to ‘Google Discover’ in any way does anybody know? I’m seeing sporadic clicks/impressions in GSC for Discover although never actually eyeballed it myself when one of our pages has featured.

Discover is a different thing. It is a Google app and there they share trending articles. Hard to be picked up but for a day or two it will give a very nice boost. Happened to me once, but I don't write much and only hired writer not so long ago.

So, has anyone who's unapproved noticed any Google News traffic?

Having an issue at the min with google news. Old format was easy to submit. The new format you need to add logos, feeds etc. We submitted a site then got told it wasnt eligible as we publish affiliate offers on there. The whole good news is full of sites like ours with affiliate offers shown on there. Makes no sense.

How is it now? Also, do you must add AMP?
