Default ranking gone for a keyword

i have been targeting 4-5 keywords for my website. one of the keyword which is searched by almost 15000 searchers a month. few months ago i started targeting that keyword. my position started from 172 and was improving. last week i was at #55. a week or more ago i started link exchange with other sites and i targeted that keyword in link exchange.i did link exchange with 6-7 sites. and yesterday i noticed that my site doesnt have any ranking for that keyword. link exchange was the only thing i tried new with other websites for that only keyword. now i am wondering if my ranking has been affected due to linked with bad websites. anyone has any clue or idea, i will much appreciate it.

I'd never participate in link exchanges myself, although I know that some sites do not do to badly from them.

It could well be to do with this, however the ranking only bummed out yesterday and when moving up it is not unusual to get fluctuations. If I were you I would wait 10 days or so and see what happens, if it doesn't come back then remove the link exchanges and see if that has an effect .

Jumping to conclusions and modifying the links when you are not 100% something is wrong could cause unwanted damage.

Let me know if you have any questions - happy to help out!

Link exchanges with semi-reputable sites are ok if done in moderation and not all at once. How many exchanges did you do & in what time period?

There you go, then. Too many, too quick.

In future concentrate on writing awesome content that other sites will naturally link to.

I would wait before you start emailing them to take the links down. I'll regularly do a promotion (not necessarily link swaps) and see a good ranking disappear for a couple of days, but they'll often reappear with a higher ranking than they were in before. It happens all the time.

I'd actually say the complete opposite... keep building links, in a variety of ways, using your desired anchor text and keep up the momentum with it. Steady and consistent growth in your link building campaigns is very effective.

By the way, 6 or 7 links in a week is absolutely nothing, so it's not a case of too many too quick at all. If your site is in the least bit established you could easily build hundreds of links a week, but you should aim to keep up that momentum too.

You can get the high rankings if you can continue with building proper links and use anchor texts properly. So keep on building links.
