Default Report: Online gambling in Sweden should be limited to certain hours

Sweden's Equality Commission, Jämlikhetskommissionen, said in a recent report that online gambling in country should only be offered at certain hours. The recommendations were made in a report “aimed at increasing economic equality in the long term and increasing the opportunities for social mobility” from the Commission, which forms part of the Ministry of Finance.

    From GamblingNews.com:

The paper proposed that gambling in the country is to be offered only at certain hours of the day. Although no precise “working hours” were proposed by the Jämlikhetskommissionen, it vowed that a more detailed offer will be made following further research on the subject.

However, the report did outline that the bigger part of gambling activities are conducted on Fridays and Saturdays.

Besides the “working hours”, the Jämlikhetskommissionen also proposed a betting limit. The paper offered the limit to be monitored by a government structure which oversees the whole gaming market in the country.

The report also said that a national portal should be created to enforce deposit limits across the entire regulated market, while gambling advertisements should carry a warning and that online gambling and online casinos were the verticals most likely to lead to problem gambling.

Difficult to see how this would be successful, if they were to limit the peak times on Friday/Saturday for instance then would that simply push the peak to another part of the week rather than reducing gambling overall I wonder?

Also is this peak due to people having just been paid or because it's their leisure time. The final comment is probably the most relevant to the proposal:

But even before the implementation of measures, the Swedish Gambling Authority warned that such restrictive measures can push players towards the black market.

This is exactly what I was about to say mate. I read a report the other day showing the increase in Curacao casinos being played in Sweden, they will flourish!

So often we so many of these legislative proposal in all aspects of our lives. An idea to make someone popular yet at the same look stupid. Hard to imagine how this could ever be adopted yet alone implemented and monitored. There are many ways around these proposals.

This decision will be very hard to implement, and it will be unproductive As someone said, there are far better solutions than this one.

mmh, I've always admired how they take these kind of thing in Sweden. But honestly, I think this is going a bit offroad now.
