The bookmaker industry is considered one of the most rapidly developing sectors of the Russian economy. It began its growth in the early 1990s after a long period of total ban in the USSR and for more than two decades has become a full-fledged sphere that satisfies the needs for the rates of more than 2.3 million inhabitants of the country.
Since 2016, the Russian bookmaker industry is in the stage of transformation, associated with the transition of most major bookmakers from the illegal zone to the legal one. This was due to changes in the legislation (entered into force in 2014) on the prohibition to organize online bets on the websites of companies that do not have a license in the Russian Federation and are not connected to the MCCIS. So far, 65% of players who bet on the Internet, continue to play, using the sites of illegal bookmakers. The main obstacles constraining the transition of players to legal Russian bookmakers are the complexity of identification and the need to pay personal income tax.
There are 29 companies licensed to carry out bookmaking in Russia, and only 11 of them accept interactive bets . . . In the near future, the first foreign operator on the Russian market - Bwin - will start accepting interactive bets. In total there are more than 100 Russian-language sites of bookmaker companies in the world that give Russian citizens the opportunity to bet.
