SEO became a multi-million dollar business with tons of so-called experts and millions of amateur webmasters pushing for the #1 spot. It's a joke. The right way to go is just to do the basics (titles, meta, h1, sitemap, links...) and focus on the human customer instead. Giving him what he came for.

    So...customer is KING.
Just because they never returned doesn't mean they didn't like it. Fore example free bets website, once someone has found the exact bet they searched for, why should they return? They converted into players started playing and will most likely search for another free bet when they get tired of the book.

You are missing the point I am trying to make. Nobody is talking about low quality sites without any unique content or any sort of design. We are talking about an OK product, and average website with average design and information. Sorry to burst your bubble, but just great content will get you nowhere.

I will give you an example from my experience. For the past 3 years, I have been writing previews, the way I can. I am not saying they are great or the best, but they were OK, and Google ranked most of them on first page, from 1st to 7th. Two month ago, Google decided that these previews should now be on page 3. Why? I didn't change anything. The top results didn't have anything more, in fact they have a lot less now, yet most likely their backlink profile grew, while I did nothing for mine.

So what's left for me to do? Grow a quality backlink portfolio. And after the necessary work, I am back where I was...

Anyways I am not here to persuade anyone to see it from this point of view. You either will or will not, but wont change the fact that IT is what it is right now.

    Just my 2cents:

I think links and content are of equally importance. Good links make you rank high and good content will make your site convert.

Crappy content on #page 1 won't convert imho.
