Only a few more days to fill out our survey!

If you haven't done so yet, open it up and answer a few questions! We had a blast with it last year, and there are even more fun questions this year! We really can't wait to see you many of you have inhaled tear gas or pepper spray!

This has got me curious now. All I have in my head is that video of him dancing on the bed in one of J Todd's APCW videos...

Well, I've been tear gassed three times.

I spent the summer of 1969 on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. A hotbed of student protesters at the time, with People's Park being a focus of protest activity. Wikipedia provides background information: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People's_Park. Mostly I was there just being a nerd. That summer was the year between my sophomore and junior year in high school, and I was attending a six week summer session for high school students put on by the mathematics department covering various topics like number theory and topology. Anyway, one evening I went down to investigate People's Park myself, where riots had been taking place. And a little after I arrived the police decided it was time to clear the area once again. The police had tear gas generators on a number of vehicles, and so they blanketed an area about eight blocks square around the park just when I was in the middle of that area. Not at all pleasant. But, as a souvenir, to this day I have in my attic a number of pieces of the fence built around the park that I collected at the time. There was a battle between students and other protesters trying to tear down the fence to keep people out of the park and the authorities who were trying to keep the fence intact and everyone out of the park.

That was the first time I was tear gassed. The second time was the following year in Chicago. I attended a similar program in the summer of 1970, this time on computers, at the Illinois Institute of Technology. And there were protests against the Vietnam War that summer where tear gas was used again. But, at least for me, nothing like at UC Berkeley.

The final time I was tear gassed was while I was a student at MIT. I had come down with strep throat, and was in the infirmary at the time. There were protests going on outside where the infirmary was located, and some of the tear gas got inside. Not so bad that we had to evacuate, but still, not good. That whole protest was one where the police demonstrated complete incompetence. Next to the infirmary was the women's dormitory known as McCormick. There were a few protesters on the roof of the building heckling the police, so they shot a few tear gas canisters up on the roof. The problem was that building have their fresh air intake equipment up on the roof, so the result was that the dormitory was filled with tear gas, so all of the students in the dormitory were forced to join the protesters outside.
