I've been watching some comments on our facebook group with interest last couple of days, given me some insight as to why punters might choose to close their accounts on sportsbook.
Scenario was that heavily-backed Jim Furyk withdrew from this week's event after 6 holes with a wrist injury. He knew about the injury (shame the punters didn't mind) and gave it a go anyway but knocked it on the head after an hour or so. All bets are losers once he pulls out having started.
Now Paddy Power and Skybet both proactively refunded bets on Furyk as a gesture of goodwill and made a big noise about it on twitter naturally. Punters who have bet elsewhere have of course been badgering their bookie to follow suit, most of whom haven't or at least haven't done so for everyone. Cue a load of dissatisfied customers and talk of 'I've now closed my account with XYZ'. Some are refunding if you ask nicely and not if you say nothing. Some are point blank refusing to budge of course, as is their right.
The net effect is probably that Paddy/Sky win as they may well pick up some of these unhappy punters.
