Smart Phones and Smart Cards for online gaming services
I came across two industry announcements last week which may or may not have considerable ramification for our business. One announcement comes from Nokia about the roll-out of their "N-Gage" gaming service.(http://www.reedfirstsource.com/news/members/lnstory~did~740110030~topic~100002731.asp). Nokia has now a software that allows them to download mobile games as well as run social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook etc. on cell phones. As far as I understand, this development will give a huge boost to the mobile gaming market, the revenues are expected to reach $7.2 billions in 2012 from $3.2 billion in 2007.
The second piece of news comes from Giesecke & Devrient (G&D), the world’s second largest provider of smart card solutions. They announced a new Internet Smart Card to be used by LOTTO Hamburg as the “Lotto Internet Stick” (http://www.gi-de.com/portal/page?_pa..._schema=PORTAL). The players just need to insert the stick into into their computer’s USB port and enter their PIN number to access the company’s online portal. With that a player identifies himself as one who has reached the age of majority, and also satisfies the German gaming law requirements.
I am just wondering how will the generation of players using innovations such as the "N-Gage" gaming service or the Internet Stick affect our business in the future, positively or negatively.
