Default Solar Shock Wave hits earth

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...thing-is-fine/

The article said it did not affect communications, but I lost internet service last night for a while, and kinda matches up with the time frame....I also recall antenna TV being pretty spotty for a while, since streaming was out of the question without internet...

Anyone in the north at least get to see more colorful Auroa last night?

The whole of the Vietnam city's power turned off for a split second last night.

Was in a rooftop bar and the whole city turned to black. Major buildings and everything. Was crazy.

Not sure if this was what made it happen

On Friday noon down here (matching up to 8PM ET) we did notice an effect on getting to some US based sites, with DNS errors and servers not loading. Local sites were fine. Was it caused by the solar storm or just coincidental?

BTW : Despite mention of visible Auroras down here in NZ - it was windy/rainy and cloudy no stars or solar storms visible.

Every time I've specifically gone somewhere hoping to see the lights, they happen to show in a place they can never be seen the day before I arrive, then when I'm there, nothing.

This must have been amazing to see if the sky was clear.
I know this thread is about the power disruption but my brain just thinks "beautiful sky".

Paul, I personally think the many disruptions that took place were due to this, but it seemed the providers didn't think so...I wonder if there were a few satellite disruptions that affected some routing somewhere and it just took a bit of time to clear up.

Like many, living in the south, I have never been fortunate enough to witness any really major Aurora's like the far north of the US as well as some other countries get to witness. If I understand things correctly, as an example, those in Canada or Alaska, in addition to some other countries, get to witness it more times per year then those in the midwest and and it is extremely rare in the south.

We have the Aurora Australis in the southern hemisphere, but here in Sydney it's extremely rare to be able to see it due to being too far north/the (lack of) intensity of the solar flares, and the fact there is too much light pollution. Where I grew up, an hour and a half south of Sydney, can sometimes see it if it's raging and you go to a place where there are no lights where the land juts out. I've never seen it though.

From Victoria and Tasmania you can see it as long as the sky is clear and you're in a place without light pollution. I've been thinking about going down to Tassie for a weekend in winter just to see if I get lucky.

Well I wish you success if you do decide to go, and maybe you will be fortunate and get to witness the Aurora Australis also while you are there also.
