Well, I initially just used Joomla for my main money maker site, however it was good in some ways, however some tasks that in principle *should* be simple, just aren't on some occasions.

I begun using Wordpress for some new sites, and whenever I need a plugin for a particular part of the site, it is easy to look for and install one, from within the wordpress back end.

However, from an SEO perspective, I aren't sure which would be the better of the two

My oppinion is , if you want to be up and running an micro website under an hour ..... use wordpress if you want to build an enterprise level website with more potential and more flexible use Joomla ......

In some ways I'd agree with you, but with Wordpress you can also purchase themes etc, which makes things a lot simpler, however these can be £200-£1000 depending on how advanced they are.
