Default Stanjames.com closes down; players moved to Unibet

StanJames.com, which was acquired by Unibet in September 2015, has officially closed down. All customer accounts and balances have been moved to the Unibet.co.uk site, where there is a message on the home page that reads:

For the past 18 months, StanJames.com had been powered by Unibet. As of 26th February 2018 you have been moved over to Unibet. The move will provide you with an improved experience in Sportsbook, Casino, Bingo and Poker. StanJames.com has now been closed down and you have one account at Unibet.

Unibet are pioneers of the online betting industry and, together with StanJames.com, bring you over 35 years of sports heritage and a global brand that includes over 12 million players worldwide. From SBC News:

Closing its Stan James Online asset, Kindred Group chooses to focus its UK growth through legacy brand Unibet and acquired online casino operator 32Red.

Founded in 1973 by Steve Fisher and James Holder, as a single betting shop in Wantage Oxfordshire, Stan James was one of the pioneering firms in telephone betting, listing its market through the UK’s terrestrial TV Teletext service.

Stan James will maintain its operations as a highstreet bookmaker, with a UK retail betting portfolio of 90 betting shops.

    Shouldn't have done it.

Takes years to build a name that people can learn to trust; all that would be gone now.

Yeah, a lot of history that will disappear sadly.

Not a big bookie Stan James but I personally used them a lot, they were particularly good for golf in terms of odds - bit of a shame really.

    Very dumb move.

Everyone knows Stan James, no one in the UK cares about Unibet. And that won't change even if Unibet think they're at the top of the world because they got an influx of new UK players.

For one fiscal year they'll have incredible growth in the UK market...

    All downhill from there though.

What's everyone's experience of how this has gone? For me the percentage of SJ punters who now appear to be using Unibet is very, very low.

No experience with SJ, but in general I find player value at Unibet very low.

I don't get it. It's a good product in my opinion.

Yeh big shame, I was doing all right out of Stan James pre-closing - I was actually happy Kindred too them over as it appeared that they were more honest with the affiliate revenue - it went up overnight the moment Kindred took them over = massive hint at large-scale shaving previously. I had built up a base of a couple of thousand customers at Stan James I always found them easy to convert.

Not looked properly at my stats but since February revenues have disappeared into a black hole (not made any money at all) and active customers through the floor, so yeh I don't think that many customers have taken them up on switching to Unibet or stayed active if they did switch.
What a stupid decision for them to close Stan James.

Just out of interest I checked today to see how many of my old Stan James players who were migrated to Unibet were still active at some point in 2024 - 19 was the answer out of just under 1,000 original FTDs from back in the day.

Not great but better than the nothing which is the usual answer when a brand disappears!

Considering that many players usually just disappear after such transitions, it's not too bad

Yes, and of the 19, 4 are what I’d class as fairly decent players so it’s definitely better than nothing.
