    Default Stolen domain name

About two weeks ago I reregistered one of my domain name with registerfly.com (vegascasino24.com). The name had lasped by about a week so I had to prove to them I was the owner, I did and proceeded to register the name. A day or to later the name gone, no longer in my account and the whois info was not in my name. Now after contacting them everday for a week and getting no where they tell me I can have the name back if I just pay a $200.00 redemption fee. Has anyone ever heard of this? Needless to say I will be pulling all of my domain names out of registerfly. Any input would be of great help

Redemptionperiod is a new system installed to domain status this year. When a registrar requests that a domain is deleted it will be put into redemptionperiod for 30 days. The idea is that it will protect the owner from accidental deletion of his domain, but it costs $200 to get the domain out of redemptionperiod (will be $100 soon I think)

It appears that this has happened to you. When a domain expires the registrar will normaly hold it for a period of time before deleting it (and therefore going into redemptionperiod). The time before deletion varies but is normaly about 30 days - this is totaly up to the registrar, some will delete almost immediate, other might wait 60 days.

It's possible that deletion is an automatic process with your registrar, and while you were attempting to reregister the domain it was deleted.

Moral, always reregistar important domains BEFORE they expire:

ACTIVE: The registry sets this status. The domain can be modified by the registrar. The domain can be renewed. The domain will be included in the zone if the domain has been delegated to at least one name server.

REGISTRY-LOCK: The registry sets this status. The domain can not be modified or deleted by the registrar. The registry must remove the REGISTRY-LOCK status for the registrar to modify the domain. The domain can be renewed. The domain will be included in the zone if the domain has been delegated to at least one name server.

REGISTRAR-LOCK: The sponsoring registrar sets this status. The domain can not be modified or deleted. The registrar must remove REGISTRAR-LOCK status to modify the domain. The domain can be renewed. The domain will be included in the zone.

REGISTRY-HOLD: The registry sets this status. The domain can not be modified or deleted by the registrar. The registry must remove the REGISTRY-HOLD status for the registrar to modify the domain. The domain can be renewed. The domain will not be included in the zone.

REGISTRAR-HOLD: The sponsoring registrar sets this status. The domain can not be modified or deleted. The registrar must remove REGISTRAR-HOLD status to modify the domain. The domain can be renewed. The domain will not be included in the zone.

REDEMPTIONPERIOD: The registry sets this status when a registrar requests that the domain name be deleted from the registry and the domain has been registered for more than 5 calendar days (if the delete request is received within 5 days of initial domain registration it will instead be deleted immediately). The domain will not be included in the zone. The domain can not be modified or purged; it can only be restored. Any other registrar requests to modify or otherwise update the domain will be rejected. The domain will be held in this status for a maximum of 30 calendar days.

PENDINGRESTORE: The registry sets this status after a registrar requests restoration of a domain that is in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The domain will be included in the zone. Registrar requests to modify or otherwise update the domain will be rejected. The domain will be held in this status while the registry waits for the registrar to provide required restoration documentation. If the registrar fails to provide documentation to the registry within 7 calendar days to confirm the restoration request, the domain will revert to REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The domain status will be set to ACTIVE only if the registrar provides documentation to the registry within 7 calendar days to confirm the restoration request.

PENDINGDELETE: The registry sets this status after a domain has been set in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status and the domain has not been restored by the registrar. The domain will not be included in the zone. Once in this status all registrar requests to modify or otherwise update the domain will be rejected. The domain will be purged from the registry database after being in this status for 5 calendar days.

Fair or not, get the hell away from Registerfly, they are absolute ****. Godaddy offers the same prices with less BS.
Why not check out some non-gaming Affiliate Programs too?

    Good point,

    baraucs...

emg, I'd use DirectNIC.com they are not expensive, and offer a lot of features in admin interface. good for people with many domains too.

    Interesting

If it was only a week after expiry, it should have gone to "need renewal", "redemption period" happens around 30 days later with most registrars. The registry fee for taking a name out of redemption is $85 and most registrars charge a bit extra to do the paper work for you. The most common charge seems to be $125. From what you are saying Register fly seems to be a complete rip-off. It might be worth writing to them and asking for an explanation as to why they are not using the apparent industry standards.

There is a domain name forum at http://www.domainstate.com
It might be worth asking there to see if you can get some cash back.

Registerfly is actually an enom reseller, and I didn't think enom deleted domains that quickly. It might be worth writing to enom as well to ask for an explanation.

My domain name expires in September

when would you reccomend renewing it?

I want to make sure I do it correctly. When I first got it I didn't have to pay, the service I use to keep my website on included first year free domain registration.

Would I renew it through them?

are all prices the same for renewal?

If so, what does it usually cost?

Your best bet Meri is to contact your hosting company and check all that with them. If they are the ones that registered your domain then they will be able to renew it but if you can renew it early without losing the remaining months then you would be in better shape without having to worry about it at the last second.

    That sounds good

I had started thinking about this about a month ago because this will be the first time I have ever had to do this and I wasn't sure how it worked.

The hosting Co. should send you out a notice 3 to 4 weeks before it expires. Also most hosting Co. will renew you domain for you free when you pay for your hosting. I know that ipowerweb and a few others do.

You might want to watch it just in case. There have been several instances of unscrupulous hosting companies NOT sending that reminder e-mail... Renewing it before it expires is always a good thing...

Your Registrar is ABACUS AMERICA, INC.
    Their site is: xhttp://www.names4ever.com
