I agree. Auto submit is a bad way to go. You are better off getting 1 good link from a site that is listed in Yahoo, Google, and MSN. Then - your site will be found by the search engines without submitting.
Plus, as Aksana mentioned, many places will submit your site to 'bad neighborhoods' such as spam sites and more. It's just not worth it IMO.
kwblue is right -- there is no need to submit your site to the search engines, because they'll find it on their own, as long as you have a link to your site from some other site. (And if you DON'T have even one link from some other site, you're not going to rank well anyway.)
My sites rank well for a wide variety of search terms, and I've never submitted them to the search engines. No need.

Well, rockcasino, I've heard other webmasters that say they do. However, I do not.
It appears, from checking my logs, that once the search engine robot comes and visits, it returns as well on a regular basis.

There are others than can probably provide more information, but you might wish to check out xxhttp://www.zeen.com (remove the xx when you copy and past into URL). It does provide for confirmation of the exchange (and its basically free).
It is a link exchange directory. Others I am sure will offer suggestions as well.
