Default Survey: Most UK gamblers not enticed by free bets or bonus spins

A survey commissioned by the UK Gambling Commission revealed that 61% of respondents said they are not influenced by "free bets or slot spins."

But 31% of those surveyed did, however, say that these kinds of promotions cause them to "gamble more than they intended to."

Participants for the online survey were sourced through a panel created by Yonder Consulting, which collects data on 8,000 adults (18+) in Great Britain per year. The survey was conducted in June 2021.

    Other key findings:

Incentives were mostly received via email (47%), with this being more commonly recalled than any other method. Gamblers were least likely to report receiving an incentive through a non-gambling app notification (8%).

Respondents who reported receiving an incentive were most likely to report receiving them for online betting activities (73%), with other online activities such as slots (39%), bingo (37%) and casino (30%) being most frequently incentivized after that.

On average, across all activities, respondents reported receiving seven incentives to gamble within the last seven days. The activities which consumers received the highest quantity of incentives for were online slots, online casino and the National Lottery.

With regard to problem gamblers, the data suggests that they generally like receiving free bets and bonus offers, with 62% agreeing. Nevertheless, they were most likely to agree that incentives encourage them to gamble more than they want to (77%), and were least likely to agree that incentives don’t change the amount they gamble (45%).

    In other words

    - bonuses do not attract players
    - they promote problem gambling

Therefore - why not prohibit all bonuses

I call - BS ( when you do a survey, you can buy any outcome that you want)

That is interesting to know and may be due to the fact that bonuses, especially free ones, have high wagering. But good to know this info!

Players are getting smarter about t&C's attached to bonuses, but I think where the terms are fair bonuses are still effective.

Of course, free offers make players play more... but personally I doubt it if this is causing problem gambling and the survey proof that

Isn't this the same as any marketing for any product from a company that you have a relationship with?

If you're previously bought a pizza with Domino's and they send you an email with an offer or text you a voucher code, sometimes you might fancy a pizza and use the offer; other times you decide not to. From a company's perspective it's called marketing and from a consumer's perspective it's called choice. The fact that you don't order a pizza every day is self control.

This is a survey for UK and would be good to see in other markets, probably the same results. That being the case the offers are not exciting enough for players.

Agree with other comments, surveys can be developed to get the results you want.

Don't think it's causing problem gambling. Also, were the subjects new to gambling or experienced? New players or returning? When you play a lot, you develop a sight for rip-off bonus one-liners..

In Japan, still many website offering free bets.
But the conversion rate is very low so we talked with some casinos and decided to not offer free bets.

New registration has been decreased to 1/3, but there's no change on our commission amount.

Some further surveys done on the subject of free bets ahead of the white paper: https://www.racingpost.com/news/bgc-...ee-bets/564977

The BGC also said the polling had found 28 per cent of respondents would consider black market betting if free bets were banned.
Pretty big number 28% for the powers that be to chew on.

Plenty of search query data to prove this is nonsense
