Survey says online gambling rising among college males

A report from the National Annenberg Survey of Youth says 1.7 million American males aged 18 to 22 gamble online at least once a month. That is a 12 percent increase from 2008.

The group also reports a rise in online gambling among female high school students, from 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent.

Projected on a national basis, the survey findings suggest that more than 400,000 college-aged males (18 to 22) go online to gamble at least once a week and more than 1.7 million do so at least once a month. About 530,000 high school-aged males go online to gamble once a month, the researchers calculated.

"The dramatic increase in use of online gambling by college-aged male youth indicates that payment restrictions on such sites are no longer a barrier to young people," ACI director Dan Romer said in an institute news release.

Those are huge figures! I'm also quite wondering what percentage of the total national population are these ages. Online gambling is quite popular for youths today.

I don't know if these figures will be an alarm to the government and try to stop online gambling to the ends, or it will be a factor to be considered for online gambling legislation. Hope that it's the later case though.

I guess the government should focus on the restriction of online gambling among teenagers. Rising of online gambling among college males has some psychological explanation. Psychologist says that males are more prone to gambling addiction than females because males often tend to seek attention which they seldom get that's why they divert their depression into other thrilling activities such as gambling.

Now that online lottery is getting its way through the industry, rising of online gambling addiction among gamblers and even teenagers and students is expected.
