Default Sweden proposes comprehensive ban on gambling with credit

The Ministry of Finance in Sweden announced its intentions to replace the existing prohibition on credit betting within the nation with a set of regulations that are deemed "more comprehensive." This decision stems from the Ministry's concerns regarding over-indebtedness, which policymakers assert is closely linked to problem gambling.

A memorandum from the Ministry of Finance is slated to take effect in April of next year, following the Swedish Gambling Authority's plan to delineate the terms of the ban starting in September.

    From Payment Expert:

“People with gambling problems run an increased risk of over-indebtedness and people who are over-indebted run an increased risk of suffering from gambling problems,” the Ministry’s statement outlined.

Under the Ministry’s proposal, licensed gambling companies and agents in Sweden will be banned from receiving payments financed with credit, regardless of how and when the credit is provided – including the use of credit cards.

This is not the first time the Ministry has expressed its support for a ban on credit card payments for gambling. Policymakers outlined their case in the “Enhanced consumer protections against risky lending and over-indebtedness” report last summer.

Swedish Minister of Financial Markets, Niklas Wykman, said: “Gambling for money on credit can lead to great financial difficulties. Therefore, we are now stopping that possibility. It is not reasonable for gambling companies or gambling agents to contribute to individuals taking such large risks.”

As it stands, it is currently illegal for licensed betting operators in Sweden to ‘offer or provide credit for stakes in gambling’. However, the Ministry argues that this ban should be made more comprehensive to effectively ban credit card payments.

Terrible. It's just getting worse and regulation is ruining this industry.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but recent changes in regulations give me the impression that they're trying everything that comes to mind without much thought, just waiting to see what works, strengthens their image and brings them money (being the last two the most important).

So Sweden are saying everyone should remove banks / credit from their lives and adopt crypto and blockchain for payments ?
Great idea - but surprised to see a Govt body admitting it.

It's your money - don't let government administrators tell you how / where to spend it.
