UK residents may play at whatever sites they please.
And actually, there are not yet any online casino or poker rooms that are licensed in the UK. The old regulations are still in effect and only permit remote wagering on sports events. The bookmaking operations of British companies like William Hill and Ladbrokes are licensed by the UK government, but these companies must obtain their remote gaming licenses from jurisdictions like Gibraltar or Malta since the UK does not yet license the activity.
However, casino and poker operators can soon obtain remote gaming licenses under the new Gambling Act (2005), which is set to take full effect in September of 2007. In fact, the UK Gambling Commission just began accepting applications for remote gaming licenses on Tuesday of this week (Jan 2), but as far as I know the government has not yet announced the licensing fees or tax rates.

Even if online casinos are hosted outside the UK, almost all of them are offering to players the british currency, so as Bradley wrote, people from UK can play whatever casinos they like.
