Default UK Lottery To Increase From 16 to 18

Released today by a number of media outlets that the lottery playing age will increase from 16 to 18 from October 2021 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55215778).

TBH it was strange that it was 16 when other forms of gambling are 18 and I thought this would have been done years ago.

I always thought that too. The government obviously had nothing to do this week I mean it is not like there are any more pressing things going on in the world.

Do you remember that young girl, I think she was 16 when she won a million. Not sure a 16 year old could handle being given a million.

Yes, turned into a skint junkie. Funny how the worst gamble in the world, you are allowed to play at 16. At least playing roulette you stand some chance of winning decent money.

I was actually surprised to read that you only have to be 16 to buy scratch cards (just haven't really thought about it before). I'm pretty sure that scratch cards are way up their with "junkie" gambling like the FOBTs.

The traditional gambling morals don't get applied to the UK National lottery I believe because they give so much of the profits to UK charities and the public see it as harmless fun. If you look at their ad campaigns "It Could Be You", if a gambling operator did that they would lose their license.

It's always been a bit of a contradiction having the lottery at 16 so this is a good move in my view.

Kids of any age can walk into any newsagent and staring them in the face is a whole selection of scratchcards. How many have hit 16 and blown their paper round money on them in one go?

The radio ads are clearly far less subject to the ASA regulations than mainstream gambling from their content, this levels the playing field somewhat.

Should have been 18 from when the UK lottery started. Glad to see the change has finally been made.

Used to be 16 for smoking too, Actually 16 you were considered an adult you could live alone, marry, join the army or work full time, Now 16 year olds are treated like children.

It was odd being less than 18 really so raising it is just making it where it should have been at the start in my opinion. It is weird having somethings (having a child!) at 16 and others 18. You are either an adult or you are not.

Personally I would make everything 17, everything, having children goes up, drinking, voting, gambling and buying porn goes down. 17 for everything is better I think. But I don't make the rules.

Ought to have been 18 from when the UK lottery began. Happy to see the change has at last been made.
