Default UKGC credit card ban begins today, as planned

The UK Gambling Commission has maintained its decision ban credit card use for gambling transactions, taking effect today 14 April, as originally announced.

    From the UKGC:

In January, the Gambling Commission and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport announced the widely-publicized ban - meaning that from today any consumer gambling will not be able to use a credit card as payment. The ban extends to credit card gambling through e-wallets.

The Commission said it is an important step forward in protecting the 10.5 million people who gamble online from harm - with statistics showing that 800,000 individuals in the UK use credit cards to gamble. Research also highlights that 22% of online gamblers using credit cards are problem gamblers, with even more suffering some form of gambling harm.

Neil McArthur, Gambling Commission chief executive, said: “This credit card ban will further protect consumers from financial harm and from today, nobody in Great Britain can use a credit card to gamble. It is a ban which ultimately reduces the risks of harm to consumers from gambling with money they do not have.

“The ban also comes at a vital time as we are seeing an increase in the use of some online products, such as online slots and virtual sports, and our online search analysis shows an increase in UK consumer interest in gambling products since the lock-down began. This highlights just how important it is for gambling operators to keep people safe and the credit card ban will help that.

“This is another milestone and we will continue to look for ways to make gambling safer.”

What a terrible move by the gambling commission. Players always have the option of just using debit cards instead

As always, the majority loss out because of a minority who, can't control their spending habits, or worse, have a gambling addiction and don't seek help. To this end, most Gov's., these days, take on a nanny-mindset.

As you said, debit cards aren't banned, so while it's a bit on an inconvenience to responsible credit card users, I'm sure it's not much of a drama to open a bank account with a Visa/Mastercard Debit attached.

And on the bright side, the UKGC have just opened up a new niche. One that won't stop people playing via credit card, just one that won't pay into the system that pays these imbeciles and their self serving "job". Very soon to shoot themselves in the foot.

I think this is a sign of things to come both for gambling and for forex as well. I'm working with both, my main site is forex though and I'm noticing that UK traffic is going down

When I think of UK I think of England, I am curious if this is also going to affect other regions such as Ireland which has still been a pretty stable region until now in gambling?

The problem with this move that in the long term it'll not achieve the goal the UKGC wanted to achieve...

Skrill and Neteller will flag funds from UK credit cards so that they cannot be used for gambling, much like they do with MasterCard deposits in some regions.

It's a very concerning topic. Will credit card use be banned in Asia as well?

For sure they can't wait to ban more payment methods.

They say "Evidence revealed some gamblers with high levels of debt were using credit cards to gamble" - But they themsleves don't reveal any of that "evidence".

    And

"support for the ban among consumers has been largely positive" - From whom, non-gamblers that believe the drivel coming them the UKGC?

    And

"consumers are aware of ways to legally bypass the ban" plus "no observed spike for credit card gamblers in money transfers" plus "no spike in ATM withdrawals" - Doesn't that simply indicate that the reasons for their ban were not justified in the first place and that they merely made it harder for the vast majority of responsible players to enjoy something that they are legally allowed to do?

    Exclamation Good!

I think its a good move, bacause the people who use credit cards are often the people who should not use it. To be addicted to gambling is not good and its a good move in my point of view.
