Video Game Hall of Fame announces inaugural class
Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Doom and World of Warcraft comprise the inaugural class of the Video Game Hall of Fame.
First, I need to be a Hall of Fame Voter. Second, how can Mortal Kombat not be on this list. It should definitely go in ahead of Doom.
Finish him!

Sheesh, don't forget Everquest.
I was NOT a player, but back when I had my computer store in the 90's and early 00's, Everquest really truly helped drive the gaming market, and it was the first really successful RPG game played online where players learned they could ramp up characters and sell them at places like eBay, until eBay stepped in and put a stop to it and created special rules etc.
The internet was fresh in those days and the gamers and chat rooms of AOL helped drive internet business. World of Warcraft ended up becoming much bigger in the end but I think Blizzard learned a lot from Everquest and how they captured the gamers wanting to be part of something more than playing with a few local friends.
I could name a lot of games I enjoyed playing much more, but when considering a "hall of fame" credit should be given to early adopters that help make the industry what it became.

Nascar was also a bit of a trend setter.
With the popularity of it, the game as well as hardware manufacturers realized the market for joysticks, steering wheels etc was HUGE.
Funny thing, no matter how good you were, and how well you distributed the weight in the car etc, you could NEVER win in Nascar one, there was a bug/flaw that was fixed in Nascar 2.....LOL
No that was not Microsoft, so no one ever called it a feature.....lol
Years later Star Trek ended up being pretty huge too. (this was predominantly during the years that W.O.W. experienced their huge growth). Star Trek had a large fan base from the series and the movies, but I was kinda shocked to see how some people became so entranced by it.
I mean some guys would not go to parties or even stand up their dates with excuses like "Sorry I had a mission last night" Some were so obsessed they treated the game and their position "rank" as a second job.
It's no wonder that today's games allow for buying currency that can be used in their games, or more levels etc, it is just a natural progression of the game developers studying how obsessed players can get when provided with the correct stimuli.
(a good example are some of the links Dan posted) LOL
