Vietnam makes move to legalize sports betting

The National Assembly in Vietnam passed a bill last week to legalize sports betting. The move occurs amid what has been described as a "rampant" level of illegal betting in the nation on sporting events. The details of the terms and conditions – including what sports will be covered – are still to be determined.

From GGR Asia:

The fledgling legal industry “must ensure transparency, objectivity and honesty, as well as ensure the rights and obligations of involved parties,” said the media outlet, citing the Vietnamese government’s stance on the matter.

Early last year, the government issued a decision in favour of a pilot program for betting on horse racing, dog racing and international football matches.

According to multiple media reports out of Vietnam, illegal sports betting is rampant in that country, and peaks at certain times, including major tournaments such as soccer’s FIFA World Cup. The latest edition of the event started in Russia on Thursday.
