Default Vietnam police bust $1B illegal online gambling ring

Vietnam authorities broke up an online gambling ring that had handled more than $1 billion in bets and arrested 22 people in what is believed to be the largest-ever internet betting operation in the communist country.

    From Technology Inquirer:

Massive raids in cities and provinces across the country this week came after the discovery of hundreds of thousands of accounts tied to a ring processing an estimated $1.28 billion in funds, state-run Thanh Nien newspaper said.

The gambling ring was operating in a “sophisticated manner that had been so difficult to detect”, the report said, citing police sources.
It explained that gamblers who visited the website Fxx88.com were asked to deposit cash into banks in exchange for virtual money in coded accounts, mostly for football betting.

The accused hid the scope of the funds by using bank accounts with small amounts of money to conduct transactions.

That's a lot of money, but I'm sure that this is not an uncommon practice and there are still many people like this out there who need to be caught that remain at large throughout the world.

Their policy on gambling is so ludicrous. It's okay for foreigners to gamble but not for the locals.

Isn't that the same that policy the the Philippines, Israel, Curacao, Macao and many others have too?
Encourage the industry to setup locally but focus internationally.

Hmmmm... using your rational, then you should also be "caught" too.
Cause your in Australia promoting casinos to other Aussies. Which, if you didn't know, has been illegal since August 2017.

For the record, I stopped promoting to AU when it became illegal to do so

Absolutely agree. Technically most of us in the same boat with this Vietnamies gaming agents.

Except affiliates who send traffic to regulated brands only (UK, Spain e.t.c) most of us make crime from law point of view. If you sent traffic to illegal brand, espesialy on Revenue Share system, this is not just advertising. We are the part of illegal gambling ring. Because the functioning of an illegal brand depends on our activities. We are the important part of this illegal mechanism.

I am not sure about englis-american law system (USA, UK, AU, NZ e.t.c.), but in continental (roman-german law system) law system (France, Germany, Russia e.t.c.) this is crime. If you help to do illegal activity you are the part of this illegal activity ( "complicity").

At the end of the day, most of us are, or in the past have probably skirted laws someway or the other. I just found vtyunby65 post humorously funny, and more so, extremely 'judgemental' given the aforementioned.

We have that problem with online communication even in native language.
If you talk to God, you are praying; If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.
