I am personally turned off by websites that use push notifications and go out of my way to turn off the browser annoyances that ask to allow them.
I have no personal recommendations, but here are some to start with

Thank you, yes, it can be an annoyance that's true when overused, some I choose to accept as I know the content they are pushing is of interest to me, bee keeping sites and some soccer news sites. I feel that if the content is worthy, which I hope it is then its something that someone may want to be told about particularly as with tips its time sensitive, I will test a few and see value for the readers, if its taken up as a value added great, if not, its outa here!
Agreed, but the problem with the notification is that the visitor see's the signup request when they visit the website the first time, BEFORE they read any content, so the first time visitor is asked to sign up before there is any trust developed.

A solid point indeed ty, I will look to see if there are ways to add it after first or second visit or second/third article visit, if the readers are back 2/3 times and are there for xx time as we are seeing now there should be value in getting notifications, but, we are readers to, so understand the issues with trying to get this working and acceptable
Hey,
we started to use onesignal as well. For the beginning quite good, but afterwards it would be mandatory to move to another one or to the pro version.
Best thing is, to create something exactly to your needs... Cost intensive but your ROI will increase if you're going the right steps.
From what I understand, services like onesignal are free, as they use the data that you collect for them. Therefore it would be best to get a custom script developed.
I come across something yesterday that may be of interest to you - pushmaze.com. It's a self hosted push notification program. I can't speak for it myself, however it was recomended by a few people who I'd take their word for it.
WebSub / PubSubHubbub is recommended.
The index will be faster, and it will be easier to gain access faster.
By using it together with Google XML Sitemaps to create sitemaps, it will be easier to get your site known to the world more reliably.
Can you share if that impacted your loading time ?
