Google Analytics (and other analytics packages) track a wide variety of statistics about visitor engagement with a site. One interesting metric is the average length of time a visitor spends on the pages of a site.
Within Google analytics, under behavior the overview page provides this statistic the whole site.
For this week's poll I ask the average time on a page for your site as a whole.
If you drill down under site content then you can also see this statistic for individual pages under all pages, or for sections of a site under content drilldown.
Besides voting in the poll be sure to share your thoughts about the actual time spent on pages on your site versus what you wish it was.
For the GPWA website the average time on a page is 1 minute and 22 seconds, but there is significant variance depending on the section of the site where the page resides. I give a few examples from shortest to longest duration:
Home page: 46 seconds
Member pages: 1 minute 11 seconds
News pages: 1 minute 18 seconds
Forum pages: 1 minute 30 seconds
Affiliate program pages: 2 minutes 1 second
Portal site pages: 2 minutes 21 seconds
I'm not surprised the time is shortest for the home page. Of course, it is most interesting to look at the data above in the context of which pages are most popular, and in the list above, not surprisingly, most of the page views (over 70%) are in the forum section. Next is the home page with close to 10% of page views followed by member pages with 8%.
