Default What do you think of Google's new WikiSearch?

I found that when I logged in to my Google account yesterday I found that the search results had a few extra icons aside every search result. I found that you can manually place the results higher or lower in the search results depending on if you find it useful or not. You can even eliminate certain keywords.

On the Google press release I read that they may even use that information as a factor in ranking the organic results.

I see it as another way to artificially manipulate the results. Imagine your competition with 1000's of proxies deleting your results from their personal Google accounts and having some effect on the SERPs.

I imagine blackhatter's are already writing bot scripts for this.

I hadn't heard this, but I am sure you are right and it will eventually influence rankings.

The comment system is another thing thats also open to abuse and spam, not entirely sure how it works, or if it does even work at the moment. But it looks like you can leave a comment about a site, then make it a public comment for everyone to see.

Yes, I worry that black hatters will find a way to take advantage of this.

Briscoe, from what I understand, they are considering using the feedback from the account holders as a possible means of ranking the organic results. That's what I read on the Press release. It may not be accurate, but time will tell.

The changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the "See all notes for this SearchWiki" link. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/...-your-own.html
Yes only time can tell but for now the changes only affect the user not the general organic search result.

They are testing for only USA traffic, we are not able to see comment system.

Its just testing and actual implementation can take time.

This might actually just be part of larger things to come. My mate Darren in integrations turned us on to this bit of news:

Its scary to think that they could take down a good site through this tool, so hopefully they will have sophisticated algorithms in place to reduce the likelihood of a false negative impacting rankings

Scarier yet 888.com relies heavily on PubCon for SEO. Yikes maybe they are part of the problem.

As I always advocated follow the Google's guide. But for those who use trickery in the short run it may work, long term definitely not. Eventually Google will catch up with you. All Google wants is honest relevant sites.

On the Google press release I read that they may even use that information as a factor in ranking the organic results.
Not sure Wager but the results you find maybe tailored made for yourself. Google search as we know is does spy as per user agreement. They do so in order to better facilitate a more personalized adverts.

    Hey guys

I chaired on Thursday at the conference in Sydney and there was an SEO panel where a question was asking about this...

The guys basically said that at this point in time they arent taking any of that into consideration with organic rankings, however if they did they would take into consideration that you are actually logged into your account and will notice related accounts so that you cant just keep putting your own site to the top...

The whole talk will be available on video soon.. If anyone is interested in more info once the vid has been released just PM me..

    Cheers

It may be good but at same time SEO's will be responsible to give good conversion rate for the click they receive on the sites.

The problem as I see it that WikiSearch with those vote buttons are not for the visitors (most of the times).

You use search engines to find relevant info. Until you click on a listing, how could you even know if the result will satisfy you? The whole process is so upside-down. You won't go back to the search results and vote up or down a listing. Sometimes when I search I don't even know which result I clicked.

Regarding the comments you can make on WikiSearch: this method favours the big sites, leaving out small ones. From my experience even if you have high traffic, not everyone will leave comments for example on your blog. And now imagine you need to make those masses to comment on your search results...Without volumes, you don't have a chance. Bye-bye startups...

Of course the above mentioned things only apply if Google makes this new system part of their algorithm.

    True

Isn't Google already serving different result per country I think they want to bring it to more specific level the personalize search result.

Farhad Manjoo just posted an interesting take on this at Slate.
