I've taken an initial look at this and have a partial answer. These recent additions are the result of the upgrade to the vbSEO system. As far as I can tell at this point the system tracks which sites are linking to each thread and which sites are linked to, and displays a list of sites with mutual connections.

It looks like the URLs noted under the reply box are ones that are included in the thread (but not all of the URLs mentioned in a thread) rather than being ones that you're connecting to in the new post.

There is a whole system for tracking pingbacks, trackbacks, and refbacks. I wasn't previously familiar with these so it will take some more education on my part or the involvement of people from our development team plus a bit more digging to see how these function exactly, whether and in what context they're desirable, and how to make full use of that aspect of the upgrade. To the right of the "thread tools" option at the top of each thread there is a new option "LinkBack." Under that icon there is a section "About LinkBacks" which outlines some of the technical aspects of this system.

But the bottom line is that this is part of a feature to improve the search engine exposure of the forums and it will take some tweaking.
