Recently, in the private forums, one of our fellow webmasters observed that 15% of the visitors to his site were using mobile devices. That got me wondering how much of the traffic to sites I'm involved with is from mobile devices. And I decided the question was an interesting enough one to make it a question of the week.
If you use Google Analytics, it reports on how many visits to a site are from mobile devices. To find the information, first look under information about visitors, and from there under mobile where information about both mobile devices used by visitors to your site and mobile carriers used by visitors to your site is given.
Looking at statistics for sites I'm involved with, the most popular types of devices are Android, iPhone and iPad, with the ordering differing from site to site, and with Blackberry being a distant fourth or fifth. And I saw mobile device percentage of overall site traffic values that ranged from 14.45% on the high-end to 3.33% at the low-end.
Take a look at your sites, and let us know what the highest percentage of mobile users you found on any of your sites. And make a post to let us know what sort of other values you see on your other sites, and what devices are most popular on your sites.
And let us know if you have or plan to do anything to tailor you sites for mobile device users. One thing I noticed is that on the sites I looked at, page views were lower from mobile devices that they were overall for the site. I'm not sure if that is because mobile users spend less time on sites in general, or because we have not taken any special steps to make the sites friendly to mobile device users.
