Yes, I thoughts so, but I asked because I couldn't believe she used a word we use in Serbia. But baba is more like pejorative for granny or old woman
    We say BAKA

Hahaha well you know my grandmother is Croatian right? (My grandfather was Serbian)

We have only ever known her as Baba. My grandmother is a bit crazy so maybe that's what she wanted to be called. I had no idea it's not a nice word. Maybe it's a dialect thing? She has lots of words in Croatian that my Croatian friends don't know what they are. Like one word, benast. Noone ever knows what it is. Google translator seems to think it means witless though, which is pretty much how she uses it. Like I said, she is crazy.

Omg, I forgot that!! You are so ours Renee!!

Well, maybe in Croatian language it's not a bad word. Not here so much either, but not too nice as well.
Hahaha, yes, benast should mean that person is not all normal in that moment. So you can say: Jesi pobenavio (verb version of that word)? - which means Are you going nuts?

She calls me magarac sometimes too. Maybe she is a benast afterall

I guess it's easy now to see where my sense of humour comes from!

Hahah maybe thats why she calls me a magarac LOL

I'm stubborn sometimes. Maybe 20% of the time.

I was telling my mum about this Baba/Baka thing and she said my grandfather (he was serbian) was the one that started calling her Baba. So maybe he was playing around, calling her an old bag and it stuck. I didn't get a chance to ask my Baba on the weekend. I will get my mum to give her a call LOL

"Baba" - i think this must be translated as "wife". Serbian language is little be simular with Russian (this is one language group - slavic languages). In Russian language "Baba" may translated as "grandmother" or "woman" or "wife" (in non-officilal conversation).

p.s. I used google translate. It translated word "Baba" (i used cyrrylic letters) from serbian to english as "woman", but from serbian to russian as "wife".

    No, it's not a wife. Unless you're 80.

How interesting is it that a language in the same alphabet with same words can mean totally different things.

Came across this old post, actually it appears annually. My Christmas tradition is just visiting friends and family. I really don't enjoy Christmas and look forward to January 2nd when everything is over and the new year starts.

The best part is just being with friends and family.

This year my dad got a lamb to put on a spit. We would have been having it at my sister's new house but they are now not moving in until after Christmas, so will be at my parents place again this year. I'm sure my Baba will be there at some point too

I bought home a 25 year old single malt Glenfiddich from the US and have some cuban cigars so dad and I will be drinking that and smoking the cigars. YOLO!

Being married to a German, initially i couldn't get my head around having the Xmas dinner on the 24th. However, being an opportunist, i soon learnt their were major advantages --- i can ski most of Xmas day without having to wait on the lifts. Luckily for me my family are mad for ski-ing, so it works out well.

Then in the evening i think what it's all cost me, so i get back on my computer and try and find (boxing day) bets that are going to pay for it all. Suffice to say, Xmas is either free or doubly expensive!!

One tradition my daughter has is opening half her presents on the 24th and the others on the 25th. It's called taking advantage of dual nationality!!

It would be weird for me celebrating christmas in the southern Hemisphere. I once spent Xmas in Hawaii and it didn't feel the same singing jingle bells on the beach!
