Default When the Levy Breaks Our Industry: APCW Perspectives for 6 December 2024

When the Levy Breaks Our Industry

If the UKGC keeps on pushing, the levy's gonna break our business!
They have just announced a new mandatory £100 levy for operators
while simultaneously rolling out stake reductions for online slots!
Is it any wonder they're losing high-level management?

That country seems to want to squeeze everyone, people, and organizations, no matter what excuse it has to make for it. At this point, every time I see news from the UK, I expect a new notification that they are going to take more money out of people's pockets until there is no more left (and then they will release just a little pressure not to kill the golden goose or just go after another industry).

A 50% tax hike (I can't even begin to imagine how bad that would be...) is really quite stupid and ridiculous and as far as the gambling commission goes, they're just absolutely laughable. Cheers JT for all of your hard work for this industry and for the GPWA.

I'm very sorry to hear about your parents. I lost my father to an aggressive form of cancer back in 2002 and I still cry and miss him.

It would appear that the Levy will be happening from April as the UKGC have confirmed this week that they've cleared the way for this to happen, as per point 3: https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.u...ation-response

    3. Removing obsolete Commission requirements due to the government’s upcoming statutory levy (LCCP RET list)

The government has now confirmed in its consultation response that it intends to move ahead with the introduction of the statutory levy. The government has brought forward the necessary legislation and expects the levy to come into force in April 2025. Once this is brought into force it will replace the current system for funding research into the prevention and treatment of gambling-related harms, harm prevention approaches and treatment for those harmed by gambling (RET). We consulted on removing paragraph 2 of SR Code Provision 3.1.1 – Combating problem gambling which currently requires gambling licensees to make an annual financial contribution to one or more organisations providing RET on a list that we maintain (sometimes referred to as the LCCP RET list).
It's still not clear exactly what this levy looks like but the number being bandied around suggest up to 1.1% of GGY, so I dare say that gets passed on to affiliates in the fullness of time.
