Question Will generative AI tools like ChatGPT help or hurt your affiliate revenue?

Earlier this week, Search Engine Land published the following article:

Will traffic from search engines fall 25% by 2026?

According to the article, Gartner is predicting users will seek answers from generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude rather than Google Search. Gartner, a technological research and consulting firm, is expecting traffic from search engines to your website will drop 25% by 2026 as a result of the rise of generative AI answer engines.

The rise of generative AI has raised legitimate concerns that Google’s Search Generative Experience (and other AI-driven answer engines) may “steal” traffic that would have gone to your website in the past or significantly drive up costs for advertisers. Many also believe that ChatGPT is already stealing market share from Google.

Gartner believes people will turn to generational AI conversational assistants (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude) rather than traditional search engines (e.g., Google). If true, this would mean a huge shift in search marketing strategies, both paid and organic.

So, for this week's poll I ask if you believe the rise in generative AI will hurt or help your affiliate revenue over the next several years.

In addition to voting in the poll, be sure to share your thoughts on the topic. Do you think generative AI won't have the predicted effect? Or do you believe it will, but your own use of generative AI tools will leave you ahead of the game?

I asked some SEOs if they think this will impact affiliates and they said not as simple. You can get single answers on some questions but for keywords that affiliates benefit from you need lists, reviews and comparisons.

I've been pondering over this poll; it's a question to which I can't find a straightforward answer.

There are too many variables involved. Yes, I believe users are seeking answers in AI generative tools (it's direct, quick, and easy), but I don't think that's the end of it. In my case, I use these tools, but I usually use them as a bridge to then go to specific sites to confirm the information or delve deeper. Do all users do this? Do the ones we're interested in do it? I don't know yet, and I doubt anyone knows for sure at this point.

On the other hand, I doubt search engines will sit idly by. I expect them to come up with something to stay in the competition and keep making money. The same goes for us; the impact won't be the same for everyone, and only those who can keep up and take advantage of the new tools will stay afloat and, ideally, maximize their earnings.

In addition to generated AI such as chatGPT, other factors such as social networking will certainly reduce traffic from search engines. Therefore, attracting customers via the web may not be a viable business in the next few years. In that case, we will look for other media. That will quite likely be a generative AI tool. However, I doubt that the affiliate business itself may remain.

I don't believe the affiliate business will disappear, but I do think it will change significantly. In an environment dominated by artificial intelligence where there's so much false information and possibilities of being scammed, information provided by someone (individual or company) with a name and reputation becomes more valuable.

As mentioned before there are different angles to this question. Generative AI can be helpful at creating content, which will reduce costs. But generative ai will also cost us traffic as people will get answers from chatbots, Google giving the answer straight etc..

I want to believe it'll help because it should help, but it depends on many factors and we're on still on early stages of AI so I say we'll know for sure only in few years from now, so far it's really hard to determine

I believe it will change the affiliate revenue, so we have to adapt. We need to find ways to benefit from it. Like it says, these are AI tools, so we need to learn how to use them in our favor))

I honestly believe that AI content can help websites, but it needs human intervention after the AI content is written (by the AI).

In terms of prompting the AI to write your type of content - then that is a different story. You have to be skilled to create prompts, know how to structure the article (inserting H tags, tables, interlinking, images, etc.)

If you just tell the AI: "Write X slots review" - it will not generate good quality content for you. And I also believe that if you're using tools like AIPRM - it won't help.
