Setup Cloudflare on your website and turn on DDOS protection. Google for explanation.

In addition to setting up a cloudflare account, find a web host that offers free dos protection.
Cloudflare is fantastic and it's easy to use and setup dos protection there. Plus it's very affordable, unlike a lot of the others.
Unless you pay lots of money, a normal host cannot protect you from a DDOS attack, even if they advertise it (unless they use a service like Cloudflare themselvers).
I had lots of headaches due to a DDOS attack a couple of years ago. I was so "clever" that I uploaded a backup to my Bluehost account, thinking that Bluehost will be able to handle that amount of traffic...
I ended up with also losing my Bluehost account and being unable to use any of the domains in that account on any other Bluehost account, so I had to move about 10 domains to a new webhost (in addition to solving the problem with the DDOS attack).
Anyway, as Samurai said, use Cloudflare and sleep well again.
Thanks to all for the information. I will be checking cloudflare.
I am currently with A2 but they don't seem to know what to do there to help so I am thinking about finding a better host first then set up cloudflare for all sites
If you went somewhere like Siteground they make it easy for you to implement Cloudflare
