Question When do you expect to begin preparatory work to cash in on the World Cup?

The 2014 World Cup begins in just under six months. If you're an affiliate and you expect to capitalize on the World Cup to drive additional affiliate revenues, you could be starting to prepare for it now, you could wait until closer to the event, or maybe you don't view there is any preparatory work for you to do at all.

The upcoming issue of the GPWA Times magazine has a couple articles covering the World Cup - one about building better world cup campaigns and one covering the top five World Cup SEO mistakes.

So, before the issue hits the streets next week at the ICE and LAC conferences in London, I thought it made sense to ask our members if and when they plan to begin preparing to cash in on the World Cup, or if they don't.

Besides voting in the poll, be sure to share your thoughts about preparatory work you plan to do yourself, and when you expect you will begin doing it.

No special preparatory work - will post match previews a couple of days before each game. But then we are in the football space and would expect a high volume of traffic to come via other source outside search engines.

This will be interesting to see how GOOGLE handles it - will "cash in" sites dominate the serps, or will most be recognised as low value, high SEO properties and ignored. A good test of SE smarts. Is it able to filter out the dross as well as a human could?

I have been thinking about this. I am going to start to put together a marketing plan in Feb to get started.

I voted February, and there's even a chance I might have to miss the LAC because of extensive prep work for the World Cup.

The entire website will be dominated by the WC, with match previews, match reports, opinions, news, bookmaker promos, statistics from past tournaments, etc.

If I want to read a decent match preview or a decent match report, I got to click through the first 5-6 pages of Google results. So the answer is - Google is incapable of putting good content on top.

I've actually had a fairly general overview of the groups stage up for a few weeks now on one of my football sites (http://www.footballbettingsites.org....july-2014.html).

From there we'll probably just focus on individual match previews nearer to the time.

I know that I expect a similar result to that this time too ....

But I guess I'm hoping that even a small part of the hype that Google and Matt Cutts et al keep spinning about intelligent search finally gets delivered in time for the World Cup.

FFS - If a 7 year old kid can tell that the first 3 pages of a basic search are garbage - then surely Google can approximate their reaction.

Perhaps they are hiring quality monitors from the wrong demographics?

I voted for February. We are currently dealing with some other topics for the site but I think February is a good time to start off with preparing the websites for the worldcup. In general I think that the search volume and the conversions will raise during this period and not only for worldcup matches. I think during this period all numbers will raise up if you have sport related content.
