Scrolling through this section of this forum shows that in past few months, it is not an exception that a casino has to shut down. Does this happen more often or is this a coincidence? Is there a reason for it?

Some casinos are shutting affiliate programs because they don't make money from players from this acquisition source.
Some casinos are shutting down completely because they don't make money after expenses.
This has been a more common occurrence in 2015 and 2016, as increased fragmentation of markets, increased suspension of markets by governments, and increased special gambling taxes have combined to both reduce the player pool and also reduce the profits from remaining players.
Your own country of The Netherlands is a prime example. With free access to trade the Netherlands should be a thriving market of nearly 17 million people with high incomes and online payment systems that want to bet on sports, casino, and poker. Instead the government have regulated to protect local monopolies that offer a poor selection of games and odds.
The Dutch government haven't given out a single licence and have spent a great deal of effort blocking their citizens from betting on foreign sites.
This is the same through much of mainland Europe, particularly in potentially valuable markets like UK, Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Germany. Regulation, restrictions and/or taxes ... and it's made the environment a challenging one to make a profit in.

The online gambling industry is still relatively new. As with any business, it's common that the smaller businesses will be overtaken by the larger ones. As it is now, the laws contribute to preventing ordinary people owning casinos. What happens if you own a small casino and a player it's lucky and win is a fortune? That will send you broke unless you do an immoral thing and refuse payouts, which is actually what a lot of the big casinos still do with their fine print
Oh dont forget some companies are getting shy down because well their bosses are serving prison time ..

Yes they would be so many risks associated with running a casino. It is much safer to be an affiliate. At least with a reputable casino you can be assured life time commissions.

It does happen a lot, like most new businesses... there are so many new online casinos each year that a lot of them fail
New casinos popping up all the time, and I don't think that all of them are well funded or have the knowledge to succeed in this industry. With all the costs involved in running a casino it is by no means a license to print money as probably some startups seem to believe.
It happens to big brands as well. I remember when the Betsson group shut down Maxino because the site was not profitable enough. I had over 1000 players refered to them... Oh wel, it is a risky business, that's for sure.
Nowadays you're able to open an online casino with a few thousand dollar, including licenses, etc. Than it's about getting some volume. If not, costs are too high and people close it down, because without a plan, a huge marketing budget or a great network, you won't get the volume that is necessairy.
In the future more and more casinos will shut down their operations. Dozens of European countries, American states, etc will have their own costful license. For every country or state it's something to take as much tax and costs as possible. For many operators it will be costful to maintain dozens of licenses. They will have to choose their battles.
