Moz Page Authority

I was looking at my stats at Moz and when looking at Domain and Page Authority I noticed for page authority, when looking at my top pages and which had the highest score, my homepage appeared twice, once without the www and once with the www and both are in the top 5.

Does that mean I am splitting page authority between the two versions? I do not know why that would be as I thought I had it set up in my htaccess to always force the www version but now I'm not so sure if that is working.

Any thoughts?

I'm not a Moz subscriber. Though, years ago when resources like these became available, and, you could use them for free, researching www or non www, all seemed to return identical results.

If your htaccess redirect coding is setup correctly (that is using 301, not 302 or nothing)... and it's redirecting from www to non www... or visa versa, then your htaccess coding is working. Same goes for http > https redirect.

Simple solution... check in browser yourself all possible URLs, and if these are ALL redirecting correctly, then your htaccess code is not the issue.

NB - not that this will make any difference on Moz BUT if you have a dedi IP for a site, you also need to redirect 301 that IP, to your site URL.

I do have a dedicated ip but I have actually never redirected it. Can you help me with the code I should put in my htaccess file?

Actually I think I got it. Does this look right?

htaccess can be a bit tricky sometimes, it depends on how the server is setup. EG - coding on hosting account A, may not work on hosting account B (if both A and B are on different hosts)...

Anyway, this i what I use:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^xxx\.xxx\.xxx\.xxx
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
</IfModule>

When entering an IP addy: EG - lets say it's 220.54.31.9, you need to add the separator \. in the syntax as I've shown above.

You maybe able to include additional "RewriteCond" rules to that, which for example, could include your other domain redirects:

• Non www to www
• Force https

However, keep in mind that this may or may not work. Reiterating, it all depends on how the box is setup.

Therefore, if combining all your domain redirects to a single directive fails, then easier to just use the above for your IP, and the others left untouched.

This what I used to force https and www

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} mydomain\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule (.*) https://www.mydomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

NB - Once "RewriteEngine On" is declared, you don't keep using it. Once is enough. However, it must be declared before any and all RewriteCond (s) are action-ed. So, lets say you commence your htacces file with a RewriteCond or an IfModule statement, then you'd add the RewriteEngine On, there. Once added there, no need to add it again.
