Samsung is now manufacturing specialized cryptocurrency mining chips
The South Korean Tech Giant Samsung is now producing specialised chips to handle the tech mining applications.
This is driving the business to produce faster chips, with less energy demands by producing ASICs that have spacings as low as 8 nano-meters and they say they will start producing a "risk production" of 7 nanometers.
If you remember Moores Law - an observation that chips speeds double every two years - that appeared in doubt during 2016 when they got down to 14 nanometers - but now it seems that it is Crypto-demands that a fueling the latest improvements that will continue this process.
Just how small is 7 nanometers? It's about 25-30 atoms wide ...
Computer science is amazing stuff - take a read of the Moore Law primer at Nature.com for an interesting read (linked below).

( Of course - some luddites still don't see the real-world business applications that this branch of human endeavour is giving us - preferring to rant about mafia and black market and scams ... but we will do our own research eh? )

Its times like these I wish I understood hardware better.
I contemplated mining bitcoin about 3 years ago, but between reading a couple articles constantly mentioning the cost of electricity to mine, and different types of graphic cards needed to mine, I was left just as confused as i was before I started reading up on it.
Just wish I made more effort to learn that side.

Hi Gerrypolt, don't worry, we have all done things that were are not proud of, and we all have our regrets. But life has to go on. I've also hit my fair share of regrets and mistakes. Believe me, if I could go back in time and make changes to everything that has happened, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I haven't had time to read the article posted above, but was there an indication of price points on the newer ASIC's, as well as whether the Mining hardware vendors have started producing units for sale with the new chips in them?
The last few rounds of mining equipment that I had spent much time investigating, seemed to have been gobbled up and were on backorder by the time they even had gotten close to release.
With Samsung getting involved, they most likely have the resources to ramp up production super fast and could most likely handle much larger volume orders for mining equipment manufactures then some others, and clearly lower power consumption (and hopefully heat production) have been caveat's mining equipment have always seemed to suffer from.
It could be a portion of the progress in transaction costs and capacity that is needed.
