Default Can ChatGPT replace Google and other search engines?

You probably have seen that OpenAI launched its ChatGPT. In general, it's chat driven by AI. Or in other words, you talk with artificial intelligence. You can read more about ChatGPT on the official page or on Wikipedia (and on thousands of news outlets).

Some independable makers already created something quite similar to a search engine, but it's based on that ChatGPT. One of the examples SayHello.

The results are quite impressive. Not had enough time to play with ChatGPT to make any conclusions yet.

What do you think? Can it replace regular searches like Google, Bing, DuckduckGo, etc.?

Edited: if you want to test it yourself, you can do it here - https://chat.openai.com/auth/login

Quick answer - Not if it continues to require an account to use.
People don't want their searches cataloged, filters and sold to 3rd parties.

Longer answer - it's still just a scripted toy.
It's not a human - and it is NOT AI or anything that is self aware - it's a series of scripts and Q&As.

It may turn into something good and useful in time, but not yet.

I have used it. Right now it's just a scrapper + rewriter. It writes exactly 4 paragraphs on general Wikipedia-type topics and can also output codes for scripting.

10 years down the line. Don't know.

To the skeptics... you should try this one here: https://beta.openai.com/playground

For me, it's really amazing how good it is. You can have it write a poem, do math calculations or suggest a 14 days travel route for your next holiday trip to Italy.

I was impressed how good the answers were. So yes, I think for a lot of non-news related queries, openai is far superior to Google (which also means that there will be less need to visit websites to get the information).

Until it is actually intelligent, I think it's just a tool that's becoming quite useful. Been testing it out to see if it can assist with data collection/research tasks. In terms of replacing a search engine, perhaps it can be good to summarize the top search results into the answer you're looking for.

Nope. Besides Google works smoother, Google also offers people the perception they can select an objective source.

Btw yes, I absolutely agree about the objective source. The level of trust people have in Google is very high.

I’m even wondering, if you conduct a social survey, then with what margin is Google in the lead?

I tried it and I must say that I really liked it. For me, it is a source of ideas and a great tool to start researching a topic.

In my opinion, at the moment it will not replace other search engines, but I think that in the future it could not only do it but also replace entry-level jobs.

Right point that in the future it has chance. And a lot will depend on marketing, actually

To change something, it`s not enough to be just a cool portal. Now is not the time when Zuckerberg launched Facebook. Huge competition, it`s important to correctly declare yourself

No, it's not a survey. Just was curious what other SEOs think as this AI chat got a lot of attention.

Since ChatGPT specifically says it doesn't search the Web, no, it cannot nor ever will replace search engines.

And AI is computationally expensive, requiring 10-100X more resources than a typical Web search engine, according to Googlers who decided to head this question off at the pass.

It cannot replace search engines for news related content. But for everything else, it has a fair chance. Or the search engines will move themselves into that direction.

This bot understands natural language and it finds answers to questions - not just websites where you "could" find the answer to your question by yourself.

Hm, at one point in history it was also more efficient to use a fax to send an image... than by email!

Oh, and to the skeptics. I tried to find that quote that I once read about fax being more efficient. And I wasn't able to find it through Google.

Guess what, I found it through OpenAI!

No, it won't end Google, this is something much more important than that.

Journalists, coders and writers will soon have to learn how to instruct ChatGPT properly, that's their new job. Like a drone pilot. Writing things yourself is dead.

This thing can write Seinfeld episodes and produce working Wordpress plugins. Mind blown.

Potentially, Yes, but it would take a very long time. Perhaps Google would aim to buy them before that situation came up, as Google has history of buying competitors, potential threats, and tech which may challenge them for the crown.

Google has approx 85 percent of the search market at present and will not be looking to give any of that up without a fight. ChatGPT is a different type of animal, but you can bet that Google and even Tesla/Twitter tsar Elon Musk knows about them by now also.

All speculative, and will be interesting to follow this and see where it all goes.
