buying a domain thru auction

i see a domain being auctioned at godaddy that interests me. its got a PR 3 with a few backlinks.

i have never purchased thru auction, anything i should be aware of? After the domain transfer and adding new content would google punish me or is it like nothing changed?

There is a good chance you might loose the pr when you change the DNS records, as essentially google will see that it belongs to someone new. If the domain has expired and is sat on godaddy's servers then the likelyhood is that the pr3 will dissapear very soon.

im new to this... so, it's not necessarily the owner/webmaster trying to sell the domain, it could be that he/she simply let it expire. then godaddy auctions it?

if the site is still "live" does that tell me anything?

do a whois lookup at www.who.is and see if it has expired. It may be in the holding period before it expires if the sites still up.

If it is a good domain it may be worth buying anyway.

Don't buy a domain based on PR, buy it based on age and rankings if its an estabkished site. Check out the history at archive.org too. If its been a holding page for any length of time, you're effectively buying it from scratch anyway although the odd inbound link will help. Check its Google indexed to be sure there is no penalty attached too.

True, but the only domain plus content we ever bought kept its PR4 - so there is a chance if you are keeping the content.

If the domain is still active, you may want to consider buying it and hosting it with the SAME company, to avoid any DNS records changing, and potentially running the risk of Google losing interest in it. Just changing the Administrator (and nothing else) will have a no-op effect on anything related to the domain.

If online gambling is ever legalized again in the U.S., it seems a given that they'd go up substantially...although probably not by a factor of 100...
