Anchor text for backlink question

Hi -

With the following anchor text for 2 backlinks:

online bingo game
bingo game

Would the first example give as much juice to the keyword 'bingo game' as the second backlink? Or would it be less because it is not an exact match?

i.e. does including your keyword within a larger phrase anchor text work as well as exact match anchor text? Just looking at this in the service of avoiding lots of links with the exact match because I'm told that is spammy.

If all your backlinks are both of those terms, you will def get an algo drop down eventually. There needs to be more variation than adding the word "online" to your KW.

Is what you are doing natural?
Is it natural for a lower traffic site to suddenly have lots of backlinks with exactly 2 words in them with a few small variations adding one other word but keeping the core 2 words? Is the algo smart enough to identify this?

Not lots of backlinks. 3 or 4. How many is lots? Is 3 or 4 at risk of penalty?

The anchor text should seem natural. If it links to your main page, the name of your site would seem natural. If it links to a news article, the topic of that article would seem natural. Doing keywords stuffing in anchor text is not helpful.

Thanks - point taken! I was over-thinking this. My point was really about how effective non-exact match keywords are in ranking your page for a search term, but all my reading and replies on this thread so you have to mix it up as much as possible to create a natural profile anyway.

You should "save" your exact match anchor for good links. You want to diversify your anchor text profile as much as possible - use longtail keywords, generic, partial match and even generic anchors.
Link building is a long-term game, don't get too creedy with anchor texts.

To answer the part in bold, I have always understood it to be the case that anchor text value depreciates, like with meta titles. So putting 'online' in front of 'bingo game' will make it less relevant to 'bingo game'.

But the other guys are right, keep it mixed up and don't use too many exact match anchors. Instead I'd get long tails and then optimise your internal links for those anchors.

The concept is to get your links on different types of anchors, so that it's not obvious for Google that you're building links. You have to have a variety of anchors, such as URL, branded, exact match, partial match etc. Otherwise, you run the risk of not getting as much juice and even getting a penalty eventually.
