How often do sporting event participants try to alter the outcome of event wagers?

A couple weeks ago a thread was started on the corruption of tennis by gambling that has generated a lot of comments about corruption of a variety of types of sporting events. You can see the thread here: Is tennis "corrupted" by gambling?

So, for this weeks poll, I thought it would be interesting to ask how often do you feel there is an attempt to alter the outcome of wagers available on sporting events by one or more of the players.

Besides answering the poll question, share your thoughts on the topic.

I doubt on the major sports that people alter the results. Even after watching the Anderson Silva fight I don't think he altered the results. It is too risky these days with the technology, its not the way it was like 1919

As I also mentioned in the tennis thread. I think the top sporters do it more for the honor and competition. Sure there will be some who are corrupt. But not that many. And a lot of top sporters earn enough money.

I saw that there was a thread on tennis. I am not a big tennis fan. Has there been and people accused to altering results?

I went with 1 in 500 due to smaller sports such as Horse Racing or Greyhounds. IMO theres a lot of fixing or throwing races the amount of horses you see gambled in for example they open at 33/1 and get bet in to 5/2.

If a horse gets gambled on and wins, it's not fixing, as other competitors would also be trying to win. The fixing in those sports is ensuring that your horse/dog doesn't win, either so you can lay it to lose or just so that it gets more favourable conditions and odds in future races when it will try to win. You then get into a debate of whether it's ethical to run your animal in unsuitable conditions where you know it won't win, even if it is trying, which is common.

Gambling is not so much fixing but manipulating, throwing a couple of races prior to increase the odds on the race you're going to gamble, giving you a much better chance of winning and giving the public a must lower opinion of the horse and increasing your profit. I'd say it was cheating, but not fixing. Suppose thats one of the perks of being an owner/trainer and its so hard for bookmakers/BHA to prove.

Even still I do beleive that there are fixed races in Horse and Greyhound racing through a favorite throwing a race. There are many 3/4 runner races whre there are two principle's and 2 outsiders where it would be very easy to fix. large field handicaps would be near on impossible to fix.

I voted for 1 - 2500, as the frequency in big leagues and tournaments might be non-existent and in lower divisions too frequent.

It really depends on the league, the team, the sport, etc. Football fans can confirm, that when AC Milan was losing their last game of the season, and it was obvious that they needed a victory to get in CL, Berlusconi wasn't gonna let that happen (hence a reverse was expected). So what happened, 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game.

I followed the odds to the very end, and at the 80th minute they were around 3.00. But that's just luck eh... To be honest I've seen some facebook pages showing supposedly fixed football games from Scandinavian divisions. They never last long, but if people offer such things, there must be a partial truth in it.

I know from first hand, that there's a lot of fixing on football games in lower divisions around here (the Balkans) mostly after half-time, but few if any books quote those. This is how club owners have decided to make money. Seems like the easier way, instead of fighting for promotions, tournament qualifications etc.

This on itself ruins the pleasure of the viewer.... What happened to that German investigation of over 250 fixed games in Europe, from which some were in Europa League, a few in Champions League. They made a statement, and nothing followed up after that.
