Same here - I heard something about both brands would continue as is. So it might not be such a big deal.
Think it would bother me if I worked for either - especially back-end stuff, but given they are distinctly different brands it's not likely to merge as one bookmaker.
No idea on the effect for affiliates but you would assume they would merge the affiliate programs.
One of my favorite sayings ''their is nothing more costly than ignorance'' . Is this the betfair which introduced a first premium charge in 2008, then increased that same charge (up) to 65% in 2011. Or the one that increased commission charge levels without prior warning. What about the one that reneged on all the deals they had with market makers, you know the same people who got them established!
Betfair and Paddy might be saying the right words now, but the long term project is cost cutting. So instead of having two diverse sports books, the reality will mean one.
From what i've heard from others on here, Paddy changed their affiliate terms (cost) on more than one occasion. I seem to remember a couple of the big affiliates (here) giving examples of how their RS had fallen over the past couple of years.
Breon Corcoran has the job of making shareholders happy, even if it's at the expense of others. The strategy might keep everyone happy short term, but it's going to eventually mean further cutbacks.
I personally have a love/hate affair with Bet(un)fair, since i stopped trading big sums with them when they reneged on the earlier deal. However, i managed to clean up when i went ''short'' on them a few years back --- personally, i'm counting the days before i can follow up with my next short - because i don't see this has a good long term move at all!!
For that reason of "shareholder value" - there seems little sense in killing off one or the other given they have different customer bases - Betfair with an older and educated one, PP (for want of a better definition) the opposite!
I'm not sure you can single out Betfair as uniquely making shareholders happy, that's the system we live in, every public listed company is obliged to do it. They did the 50% premium charge because they could, they have a monopoly - I blame that as much on the ineptitude of their rivals as BF exploiting their customer base - but the motivation is the same - to maximise shareholder value.
I don't understand why they merged as I can't see what they add to each other apart from being a bigger company, but I suppose there's plenty of money to be made for the financial industry in these mergers - even if the long-term stats seem to suggest there's no value in them.
A giant is now ready to conquer the gaming market and become no1. Many possibilities to succed it.
